Steve, you can use your kangaroo strop, free hand, to maintain the edge between sharpening. My favorite and most used W. E. Strop pair is the 4µ/2µ Diamond Emulsion on leather.

Steve I like using the lightest grit you can get by with, like airscapes wrote. Using the fine grit stones at about 20º per side may apply a micro bevel that should help the durability and longevity of the edge while retaining the sharpness.
You may get by with just stropping the edge, and not going with stones. That can do wonders to ma…[Read more]

They shouldn’t tear up the knives too bad using it for touch ups. If used properly and sparingly.

Here is the link I posted above: https://knife.wickededgeusa.com/forums/forum/wicked-edge-go/

Maybe send the knives back to your cousins with a pre-addressed, (to you), prepaid return envelope. Then they have no excuse.

Dane, Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum. Look under Forums, Main Forums, Technique and Sharpening Strategies, Reed Knives. Everything I see there is not recent although it may be helpful for the technique. Also try JendeIndustries.com. They sell both the reed knives and Wicked Edge Sharpeners to sharpen the reed knives.

That riser block is a Wicked Edge part off an upgrade kit from years ago that I wasn’t using any longer and I had in my parts box. A forum particpant “rummels” recently posted he had gotten a “riser block” from Wicked Edge. So try to contact them. It’s simply a bolt on part requiring longer screws.

Reid, a couple other options are
- Remove the thumb stud to get it out of your way
- Disassemble the knife, clamp and sharpen just the blade
- Try a “Tormek Small Knife Adapter” which allows you to clamp the knife handle to offset the blade out away from the vise. This different angle often gives unobstructive blade access. (Some users have c…

The angle setting reduction is just “a suggestion”, not a requirement.
Your doing everything right. That’s why we refer to it as “your sharpening technique”. It’s an individualized thing. We each need to find what works best for each of us and adapt our individual techniques to utilize these differences. That’s good that you experimented wit…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Is Strop Repair Possible? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 4 months ago
Ted I always use the stone stop collars when sharpening, both an upper and lower stops to limit the sharpening stone motion and improve my stone use efficiency across the knife edge. I just remove the top stop collars when stropping.

Ted after several years using my Wicked Edge and helping with this Forum I have picked up some new information on old questions, asked again, by newer Forum participants. Some of these same old conversations introduce something I’ve never heard, put into maybe a different context, or that I’d just forgotten and now a light has gone off when…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Is Strop Repair Possible? in the forum Main Forum 5 years, 4 months ago
Ted, it is imperative to remove the upper shaft collars, (i. e., stone stops) before stropping. You don’t want anything to halt or impede your edge trailing, up and off, stroke direction and stroke movement or progress with the leather in the middle of the blade. The sudden abrupt stop in forward strop movement is almost guaranteed to cut or g…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic Another stones progression question in the forum Abrasives 5 years, 4 months ago
Ted I’ll follow Organic’s cue and take issue with this single statement:
Actually stropping requires seemingly strong pressure and probably more strokes then you would have imagined. With leather strops the general consensus is reduce your sharpening bevel angle by 1.5º to 2º less for the stropping phase, for the newbie. That means if you…[Read more]

Brewbear, of the two Ceramic Stone types offered by Wicked Edge I also prefer the “Micro-Fine” Style (1.4µ/0.6µ), over the Super Fine (1200/1600). Remember the ceramics take a lot of breaking in before you’ll feel good results. The effect from the ceramics in my experience is a sharper edge, not so much a shinier bevel.
Yes you are correct abo…[Read more]
