I think curved stones would not duplicate the consistent WEPPS bevels. The math (Anthony Yan’s) would be overly complex and full of approximations especially over curved sections.

Hey Organic, since you posted your serrated pic, I ask how do you use a WEPS on it. It is one of my side project wish list items.
We know that each serration is it’s own little knife and am familiar with various techniques but none come close to perfectly aligned mirror edges on each one.
I envision the need for diamond rods, fixed to a WEPS…[Read more]

I’m not sure what’s possible. Determining when you reach the full apex and raise a burr is probably not feasible. IMO, nothing beats the finger swipe. I was thinking that the “noise plot” would level out when say a 400 grit has removed all the 200 grit scratches. You could then minimize the strokes and metal removal. I downloaded some sound…[Read more]

Lots of us use USB scopes to verify max bevel contact in conjunction with a Sharpie. The scope takes time to see the full blade on both sides for a visual decision to move on.
I propose trying an acoustic pickup to some sort of computer graphics which I think will show different profile signatures as max bevel contact is approached. I envision…[Read more]

WEPS Field Pro; electric: Chef Choice diamond, Shun ceramic; HF 1×30; Messermeister white ceramic rod
1. After learning the feel and sound of max bevel contact with the diamond paddles, I can now free hand true up my kitchen knives on the Messermeister (very light strokes). I have 8 non-serrated steak knives, some of which hit the dinner plate…[Read more]

Nice setup. I dabble in material science as a hobby. Attached are a couple of pics (one of my Favorites and the other from the WEPS Knowledge Base).
I recommend the Verhoeven works greatly as they have a lot of well written technical info.

The mobile version of the WEPS site leaves a lot to be desired. Just saying.

Nice job.
As an aside, and along the line of visionary “beer talk” might we start a discussion of the ultimate tip. This is prob most appropriate for kitchen knife honsuki types which I use to skin out full beef tenderloins into filet mignoins. To me, the ability of a perfect (impossible) needle point to surgically slice is in the same family as…[Read more]

IMO you are going to have to redo the tip. The chip goes ~1/3 into the bevel. I would reprofile the tip until the chip is “gone”, plus a little. Bad chips can have damaged subsurface steel. I have used the diamond paddles for this using the surface area not normally used in sharpening (near the top/bottom). It is going to take quite a while though…[Read more]

Readheads replied to the topic 'Bulge' in strop with new Wicked Edge…normal? in the forum Stropping 6 years ago
I have replaced the leather in mine and have found that they are attached with hot glue which peels off. When reapplying you must do it relatively fast with consistent hard pressure otherwise the hot glue hardens into clumps. If that happens just peel the leather off again, clean it up and try again. I think that might be the cause of the lump.

Readheads replied to the topic Convex bevel width; primary bevel scratching in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 1 month ago
Maybe using the strops with emulsion (which burnishes instead of abraids) would smooth over the facets. It would take some experiments to determine the effectiveness against 2, 1, or 0.5 deg facet changes but with a USB scope you should be able to tell pretty fast. I love what the burnishing does to my bevel. I follow the “back off 2 deg from t…[Read more]

You are where I was with the knife guards. I only do kitchen knives and many are quite flexible. I found the guards were too bulky, not stiff and too low. Those stiff heavy tees fit nicely in the clamp. I wanted wider ones for full coverage but that’s all I could find. I found someone who would machine 6″ wide jaws for a clean look but I didn’t…[Read more]

My jig is made from 2 heavy duty tee plates with 2 screws/nuts to clamp on the knife. All from H Depot for $9. You have to slim up the screws/nuts to clear the diamond stones. A longer rod length helps but it worked with the standard ones. It also works as a low angle adapter but the alignment guide for repeatability won’t reach. You can jug that…[Read more]

I am happy with the serrated results, but the only grit I had was 100-200 diamond. I remembered that I have a ceramic 0.25″ diameter sharpening rod of ~600 grit (I think). I put the WEPS on its side in my vise (as it holds knives beautifully) and went at it free hand. It worked pretty good and the surface finish difference is easy to see in the 9…[Read more]
