I usually do 8o strokes per grit stropping. Too many…not enough?

Thank you for the replies. Both having me thinking. The Edge-On-Up would be great, if I could afford it. Interesting…

So, after 1000, I go 1500>2200>3000>9 & 3 DLP, then to strops 14>10>5>3.5>1>.5 emulsions on balsa. I seem to get my best hair splitting edge at 10u. After that, I can get splitting, but it just seems to get progressively worse as I go finer. I keep the same angle throughout, with very light pressure, so I don’t think I’m rolling the edge. I…[Read more]

Thanks for all the help. I figured out how to mount it so that I could sharpen the edge, with a single mounting, at least reasonably well. Well enough for me, at least. Thanks again…

Looks awesome! Just what I needed to see. I have yet to do mine, but I was hoping to be able to mount once and sharpen in two sections. I guess I’ll have to mount twice, one for each section. Thank you for taking the time to post this. It really is a nice looking blade. For me, the knife is a good fit in the hand and deploys very smoothly.

Nice gift. They do come pretty sharp, although I’ve been sharpening them right out of the box. You’re a much better judge of D2 than I am, for sure, however from all I’ve read, this D2 is good stuff. That’s one of the reasons I started buying Ganzo knives. Add the bearings and I couldn’t resist.

Thanks. Been using leather strops for a while, just not with the emulsions. I’m looking forward to it.

I’m getting my first emulsions and want to know the best way to load and maintain the leather/emulsion strops. Thanks for the help.

NorCalQ replied to the topic 1500 Stone Confusion (2200, 3000) in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 10 months ago
So, I spoke with WE this afternoon. They told me that once the 2200/3000 stones are broken in, they should fall right in line with the 1500/glass platen stone that I have now. As long as the 1500 stones have the green handle, with 1500 stamped on it, this should be the case.

Had my first chance to work with my new 2200/3K stones today. They were pretty chunky to start with, but after about 200 strokes per, they smoothed out enough for me to get some initial pics with the scope. So here’s the confusing part…when compared with my 1500 stones, the scratches seem to fall in line with the expected progression of 1…[Read more]

Welcome, Howard. I’m not expert, however I do get hair-splitting, mirror edges, so I’ll chime in until those with more experience do so. You’ll find many techniques that will get you to your goal. As for me, I use downward strokes, in a heel to tip direction until I strop and use films, at which time I use upward strokes. I find I get more con…[Read more]

Just got off the phone with WE and thought I’d pass along what I was told. WE said that if I have the green/white, “1500” stamped handles, then the 1500 stones will fall in well with the 1500-2200-3000 progression. Issues with the 1500 stones being finer than should be, were with earlier 1500 stones.
Also, I received my 2200/3000 stones from A…[Read more]

So, which best suits you and your progressions? I do like the idea of the balsa, however do you still get hair-splitting results with it?

I’m looking at adding 1/0.5 micron diamond emulsion strops and I’m not sure which way to go for the base material. My thoughts are that balsa has the least “give” in the surface flatness when pressure is applied, then leather, then kangaroo. I’m also sure that there are other factors which should be considered, that I’m not aware of. I’d li…[Read more]

Good advice. I def going to attempt to keep that factory edge shape. I guess that’s what attracted me to the knife in the first place, so you’re both right…I should keep it. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. You’re right as usual and I should do everything I can to maintain that blade shape. Actually, my normal procedure is to sharpen in sections anyways, so that might work to this blade’s advantage. As you said, clamping will be a concern, as there are a lot of surfaces there. It really is a beautiful D2 blade and at a pri…[Read more]

NorCalQ replied to the topic Magnetized blade in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 11 months ago
I had questions about the Angle Cube magnets magnetizing the metal stones, but I was told that wouldn’t happen. At any rate, demagnetizers can be found at cheap prices. I bought one on ebay and although there’s a bit of technique to using it, it does work.

I just got this Ganzo FH61 and I’m wondering just how I’m going to sharpen it. I’m not real concerned about maintaining the exact apex of the “curve” of the belly, so I’m thinking about just mounting it up like it had a rounded belly. My strokes will follow the edge like usual, which may end up rounding over that belly apex.
Thoughts?
