Karl, you certainly have a selection of stones that will help you get that polished edge finish. If your stones are broken in, that will surely help. Used in the correct sequence and most importantly with a good technique you have everything you’ll need. There is no magic number of stone strokes that give you the edge you seek. As Organ…[Read more]

Cameron, the angle markings/indexes on the square bare are just an approximation. You should set your desired 17º (dps) angle using the angle cube. Is that what you did when you determined the actual angles were more like 15.4º and 15.8º ? After you realized the actual measured angles (i.e., using a zeroed out digital angle cube) were less th…[Read more]

Realize when sharpening knives we always throw off steel dust. I know this is not as abrasive as the diamond dust and doesn’t causes as much of the stray scratches. But we still need to operate with caution. Some of us use “Swifters” to wipe the loose dust. Some use the “Swifter” dust cloths or Alcohol lens cleaning cloths. Still others like…[Read more]

Sorry… give time, time. Everything you do you’ll get improved results. The stones will get cleaner. Soon they’ll have nothing loose to drop and will only improve with time. I don’t believe it has any relation to travel speed. Your technique will improve. You’ll be more careful cleaning the sharpened blade. Each knife you sharpen you’ll…[Read more]

Bob, ditto what Organic said.
Let me say that the Wicked Edge being a hand tool is a very personal thing. Each of us have different needs and priorities for the different kinds and types of knives we use and collect. What is an absolute necessity for one person may not even enter into the equation for another.
It wasn’t until after I s…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum and Community, TI2525. I recently had this discussion with a WE Forum compatriot via email concerning this same issue he was relating from, I believe, the WE Face Book page.
My take on this issue is essentially the same as tcmeyer’s. This issue I usually see experienced with new users of the Wicked Edge. Wh…[Read more]

Gary in reference to my suggestion above to send in your old vice to Wicked Edge for a parts upgrade including the tension adjusting box, after further consideration I remembered there are other differences in the older, original version, Gen 3 vices. Theses have an open sided vice housing, different cam springs and cam followers. These…[Read more]

Gary if you’ve never used it, possible you can discuss with Wicked Edge if they’ll let you ship that one in to them for the modification. That is the addition of the jaw tension adjuster if it can even be added to the older style vice. The split jaws can be purchased as an add-on accessory.

Gary I’d be interested to see what results you get. If you do it please share your experience. I don’t know if there’s any real advantage to having the split jaws with-out the tension adjustment feature incorporated with the newer version vice. I don’t see the split jaws really flexing unless I really clamp with a lot of pressure. I don’t bel…[Read more]

Bob, I agree with “I wouldn’t bother with the Gen 1”, (i.e. WE100, Pro-Pack 1 or Field and Sport). I believe the advantages of the Gen 2 do make it a far better, easier and more versatile version to use, especially for such a small price difference. The Gen 2 includes: WE120 and the Pro-Pack 2.
Everything the forum poster, jojiichan, said has m…[Read more]

Karl, hold the micro angle adjustment screw in position, with the adjustment hex tool, after getting your angle set with your cube. Then while still holding screw in place with the hex tool still inserted, turn the knurled jam knob tight against the mini L bracket, as tight as you can. Then double check your angle with the cube again. If you f…[Read more]

I agree completely with Organic. Another thing to consider is, your rod arm length only needs to be long enough to allow for the full range of motion on the stone’s length up and across the knife edge. Any rod length beyond that the stone doesn’t slide up and over is extra length. Too long a rod you then need to use a stone stop to prevent th…[Read more]

Sorry to here of your injury Alden. Keep the faith. Hopefully you’ll be in rehab soon with the physical/occupational Therapists. Don’t keep your new WE GO a secret from them. You may find using it could be a helpful part of your rehabilitation? You never know. The motion is gentle and repetitive like exercising.
