I would suggest you should start with the WE diamond stones using the coarsest stone, (e.g., 200 or 400 grit), that you can and still get the job done without too much effort and time. Step back down coarser if the starting place wasn’t working well enough.
After progressing up and through the WE 1000, I prefer to use the “Microfine” Ceramics 1…[Read more]

I used my strops today with the new WE strop covers for the first time. I like being able to keep the strop side covered that’s closest to my hands while stropping the knife. It keeps me from contaminating the strop medium and emulsion as I grip it along with keeping the stropping compound off my hands and fingers.
When I switched strop sides t…[Read more]

Clay, I bet you’ll never do that again. What a bummer. I do hope that you enjoyed Italy. It’s a beautiful country.
Please let us know if you have as good an experience with the new one. I’m curious how consistent Spyderco’s hardening process is from batch to batch. I have experienced differences in the same kind of super hard stainless ste…[Read more]

I have found I get better results and longevity with the Diamond Emulsion Stropping Compounds if I apply them to my stropping medium before I intend to use the strop. I allow it dry completely, usually over night. I don’t experience the scrape off or flaking using the dried emulsions. When I had used the strops right after applying fresh co…[Read more]

I can suggest from experience that the stropping emulsions will stay on the leather better and last longer if you apply it the day before you intend to use the strops and allow the emulsions to thoroughly dry overnight. When I use the dried strops I get very little scrape or flake off.
The 2º reduction from you sharpening angle is a general…[Read more]

I have Rack-It layouts that are compatible with the WE Strop Covers, for those of you concerned with cross contamination using my open design Rack-Its.

I just received my order for Wicked Edge’s Strop Covers. They fit beautifully. They are very low profile; a nice design. They slide on from the end, stay put, snug and very secure, and don’t contact the diamond abrasive embedded strop’s surface. I labeled mine to avoid cross contamination when replacing them after using.
For those of you won…[Read more]

You might try using a round chop stick, (used for eatting Chinese food), just like you’re using the file. You can pull across the serrations, successively finer grit sand papers or emery cloth that you have wrapped up over the chop stick and held in place with your fingers on the stone. This should allow you to finish the edge to a sm…[Read more]

Paul, none of what I wrote was an epiphany. I simply share and reiterate, with my personal experiential spin, what I have learned from other Wicked Edge Sharpeners and Forum members who proceeded me. The models and versions of the Wicked Edge Sharpeners have changed but the techniques are pretty much the same. There have been some newer pr…[Read more]

I’d like to comment on expidia’s post. I’ve quoted several different topics from it and numbered them so I could lend my take and insight for each one separately, to try to help the new sharpeners on this Forum, and him, gain experience in WE sharpening, and to help you and him improve your techniques:
1) I’ve found to maintain a better…[Read more]

I want to make sure what I posted is clearly understood. I have nothing against perfectly symmetrical, pretty, shiny, even bevels. This is not what makes a knife sharp. That was proven by the knife I pictured and many others I have photographed, right out-of-the-box. There was nothing pretty, special or even about that knife’s edge. But it w…[Read more]

Here are a couple more photos from the right side bevel:
As you can see the bevel’s are inconsistent in size and grind shape from knife side to side and also up along the knife’s length of the bevels on the same knife sides. You’ll also notice the lack of polish in these bevels.
When we try to sharpen a knife precisely and evenly, with even…[Read more] -

With the flavor of this Forum lately being discussions on matching bevel angles and “find the sweet spot”, I thought this was an appropriate example for this discussion. Many new users to the Wicked Edge Sharpening Systems seek advice on how to sharpen their knife blades while matching or keeping the bevel angle the same as it came with the k…[Read more]

Bob , You didn’t specify the pin position, if the pin was placed in the upper holes I would try moving the pin down to the lower holes, first. If I got the majority of the knife to line up in the upper holes It should still do the same, now resting on the pins in the lower key holes. Then I’d see if that affect the tip any. You may find you ha…[Read more]

Jayson I can only speak in generalities since I have no personal experience sharpening that particular knife. I’m assuming your use of the term “scale” is to denote the position of the knife, clamped, as it corresponds to the Wicked Edge alignment guide or the advanced alignment guide. I don’t have a clamping position to suggest. I can say th…[Read more]

Jayson the settings you choose depend on which WEPS Model you’re using and the bevel angle you want to profile the knife.
