The angle markings/divisions on all of the WEPS models are really only a guide to indicate your direction of angle changes and to help you keep track of where your starting from and where your moving the angle to when making adjustments. These angle increments are all but arbitrary for all but a very few knives. Don’t be concerned that the in…[Read more]

Alan put in more time and effort, and attention to detail, with each and every grit along the way. It’s helpful to verify your guide rod angle settings with a digital angle cube for each and every grit change. That little bit of micro-fine angle tuning will help your consistency.

Testing or demonstrating the sharpness of a freshly sharpened “Wicked Edge’ with magazine or newspaper can dull the edge as it’s slicing the paper to ribbons just enough to exhibit noticeable fall off. To bring back the edge by stropping I’d begin with a coarse grit of at least 4µ and progress down the grits to finish with 0.25µ.

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic Stone/Strop Question – 1500 Diamond vs. 1200/1600 Ceramic in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 5 months ago
The 1500 grit Diamond, IMO, is the ultimate edge refining diamond stone WE offers. It’s usually the last stone I use before strops when sharpening knives for friends. It gives the perfect balance of sharpness, and polish.

Take a look at the Pro-Pack 2 setup offered by Wicked Edge. You’ll see the abrasive pairs included are for a progression from 1000 grit diamonds to the micro-fine ceramics, then on to the strops.

Jim,
When your stones are well broken in and when you’re confident that your technique is good, as your sharpening experience increases, I think you’ll find you can achieve a nicely polished bevel, with exactly the stones you now own, simply by putting in extra time and effort with each grit in your progression. By verifying your guide rod…[Read more]

Alan, I found this video of a guy “Free Stone” sharpening one. From what I saw from watching this, if you can clamp this unique styled wide spine and wide beveled knife in your WE clamp, with the knife edge high enough up to allow complete, unencumbered, blade access and full bevel contact with the very wide and possibly convexed bevel,…[Read more]

Welcome back Jim, I do continue my diamond stone progression up through and including the 1500 grit diamond stone, and stop with the diamond stones there. If you want to consider including a ceramic stone in your progression my preference is the “microfine ceramic set” 1.4 micron/ 0.6 micron, over the “superfine” ceramic set 1200/1600 grit. I f…[Read more]

expidia, there are two aspects of profiling; blade angle and blade shape. Changing the angle to the guide rod angle setting you have chosen is desired. Making changes to the shape of the knife is sometimes not. Removal of the applied Sharpie black marker ink indicates where you’re stones are contacting the blade edge. To maximize this con…[Read more]

Welcome to the Forum, Needhelp. I have not. It’s hard to tell from the file you attached the actual size of the blade or thickness. I can say if you can clamp that blade in a Wicked Edge System vice, securely, in a symmetrical arc, balanced from side to side, I don’t see why you couldn’t put an edge on it. It appears as a regular curved sh…[Read more]

If the knife is straight and ground centered. The extra attention should drop (lower) the short sided bevel, or shorten the long side.

Hey William,
First I’d look at the knife to see if I could ascertain it is ground symmetrically. (It isn’t to uncommon to see a knife, especially high end hand ground knives, that aren’t perfectly symmetrically ground.) Next, I would look to determine the knife is clamping and staying centered not leaning for some unexpected reason, under the c…[Read more]

Richard, this is a little difficult, at least for me, to conceptualize what you mean, from the words I’m reading. It would be much easier with a visual aide of a drawing labeled to show the points you reference for the measurements, a labeled knife for example.
Take a look at your axis labels on the graphs you attached. I believe the second i…[Read more]

Michael which WEPS model do you use? Is the top side forward of the spine and behind the tip beveled and sharpened, also? If it is I’d do that part first. Exercise care at the tip to keep from rounding it. When finished with the top bevel, I’d tape it for protection because you’ll be clamping close to that blade portion when you flip it and…[Read more]

I’d attempt it by clamping it centered in the jaws to balance the amount of the arc of the blade forward and behind and below the jaw center and jaw line, in a manner that a line imagined between the knife edge right at where the heel meets the handle and the tip of the knife blade is parallel to the jaw line.
Sounds like your describing a knife…[Read more]
