Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Reid, Using the Wicked Edge Systems isn’t too difficult, but it is not easy, either. Half the battle is clamping a knife for the first time. There are so many different kinds, styles, sizes and shaped knives that it can be a real challenge at times to clamp some of these knives. It will become easier and mor…[Read more]

Just understand that each grit medium: diamond stones, ceramic stones, whetstones, lapping films, strops, etc, have their own associated scratch patterns. Even if you use two different mediums both label and rated with the same size diamond grit particles, the visualized scratch pattern may appear totally different. You’ll need some sort of li…[Read more]

Here is how a deceased member and former regular contributor of our forum found it was best for him to use the ceramics:
“My usual progression starting from zero is: diamond stones (100-1000) – coarse micro-fine ceramics (“1.4”) – 1200 ceramics – 1600 ceramics – fine micro-fine ceramics (“0.6”)”.
Hope this helps, Mark76

BubsterX1, I just want to point out, we are trying to sharpen our knife edges. That is bringing the opposite side bevels together in a manner that these planes precisely intersect in a line; the knife edge or the apex of the bevel. It doesn’t matter how wide or tall the bevels are as long as the edge is sharp. The appearance and the evenness of…[Read more]

Here’s what one of our new users determined he liked best: https://knife.wickededgeusa.com/forums/topic/i-think-i-am-doing-something-wrong/#post-47470.
I want to add to this discussion that the ceramic stones have a longer break-in period then the diamond stones, before you’ll get optimal results using them. Also, you need to decide what res…[Read more]

They sort of overlap. The intuitive way, using grit progression charts and the practical way using visual observation of the results doesn’t coincide. There have been many posts going back several years that suggest the best way to commingle these ceramics to achieve the best succession results. Honestly I can’t remember what that was. Andrew, It’s probably due to the configuration or width of the tip grind as compared to the width of the heel grind.
The issues you sight you would never have even considered before you purchased and began using the Wicked Edge. Isn’t it funny how protective we become of a piece of steel once we’ve invested some time, effort and care in it. W…[Read more]

Use your knives and enjoy them. IMO, if they aren’t moving with applied force against the surface they aren’t dulling. The edge is not as fragile as you think. It’s designed to cut through a meat product against a hard ceramic, porcelain surface or similar substrate. Most people use these kind of knives forever and never sharpen them. Besi…[Read more]

Marc H (Wicked Edge Expert Corner) replied to the topic New to sharpening – question about technique in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 4 months ago
I sharpen my knives to achieve the sharp edge each individual knife deserves. Some of my knives are, I believe, a beautifully forged work of art and a fine cutting tool. I do not keep a clock on the sharpening sessions nor do I consider a long effort an inefficient use, or a waste of time. It is not unreasonable, for me, to start a knife tod…[Read more]

Here’s a YouTube Video I found of a guy sharpening a long flexible filet knife with his home-made Wicked Edge-like sharpener. His video does use some of the techniques I wrote about in this post. Even though the sharpener is not a real Wicked Edge Precision Sharpener it has all the same issues you are experiencing. It is close enough that if…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, burettou. Some thin bladed knives may need to be positioned and clamped higher up in the jaws. In a position where the knife doesn’t rest or even contact the depth key. As long as the knife is held securely is all that matters. For flexible knives I try to clamp the knives in a manner that stabilizes some of…[Read more]

Chico, there is no exact number of stone strokes where you’ll be at your desired results. This is all too subjective. You are the one to determine what you’re looking for. The number of strokes that works for me may not work for you. I do not count stone strokes. I do everything based on visual results. I quit when it looks like I want it t…[Read more]

Just to save you any disappointment these Wicked Edge Micro Fine Ceramic Stones will require a longer break-in period then the Wicked Edge Diamond Stone paddles. The Ceramics are a good choice, and another alternative, to use following the 1500 grit diamond stones to enhance your edge sharpness and polish.

Aaron you will be able to attain your objectives. First you need to gain the experience, technique and consistency to do it. It’s more about what you do then how you do it. At this early stage in your sharpening experience, technique is number one. With out proper consistent technique it doesn’t matter what mediums you use or the orde…[Read more]

Hello Aaron, welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum and community. What you say is correct. It is counterintuitive. Yes, it’s common practice to step back a grit or so when switching abrasive mediums in your sharpening progression. Each medium substrate is different with different scratch pattern characteristics. So your understanding is corr…[Read more]
