That knife you’re inquiring about is a vintage carbon steel French Sabatier knife. It belonged to my father. It could be over 60 years old.
The bolster pommel, the tang and the blade are all forged from the same solid piece of steel. The guard has always been square, like that.
The knife sharpens well and easily. I like the patina. It kee…[Read more]

Realize thin, narrow, long and flexible filet knives present clamping and sharpening issues with the W.E. More so then stiffer bladed knives.
As a fisherman who has cleaned thousands of fish over the years, I never found a fish I couldn’t filet well with my preferred, stiffer boning style fish cleaning knife, over the thinner, longer, more fl…[Read more]

I usually start with 6µ then progress down only to 0.5µ, (no finer). Be aware to only use edge trailing, that is up and off the knife edge strokes. I find very light pressure works best for me. Be sure to clean the bevel first with rubbing alchohol on a clean towel, before starting the films and also between each grit. It’ll help avoid some…[Read more]

Not intending to contradict any of tcmeyer’s suggestions I will hone in on this part of the statement and expand from here:
Sharpening knives while using our Wicked Edge Precision Sharpeners, (WEPS), is an individualized process. You will develop your personal sharpening technique after trying different suggestions you pick up here from…[Read more]

I agree with Organic… your new Gen 3 Pro looks just as it should. The newest models have a short threaded guide rod end with no jam nut. The angle variation you see from side to side is within the normal variances seen with the gross angle adjustment levers. The micro-angle adjuster screws can easily fine adjust for that slight va…[Read more]

Mark, it’s hard to beat the diamond lapping films for producing a polished edge. A good effort with strops does help, maybe a 4 or 5 grit strop progression with a lot of time, strokes, and attention to detail. But nothing is as fast and effective as the films. I still do follow the films with the strops.

Mark, why do you want to add finer grit stones to your sharpening progression? What are you looking to accomplish? A sharper edge or a finer polished bevels?

I’d try this method as a positioning exercise to help you decide for yourself:
I’d clamp the knife as high up in the vise as you can securely clamp it. Then with the blade portions where the flatter rear portion transitions to the forward curved portion of the blade centered in the vise middle. Then paint the bevel with your marker.
With a w…[Read more]

Amazon sells for several W.E. licensed dealers, too. You just have to look who the sellers are for the items your buying. I happen to like buying W.E. from Amazon being a Prime member…gives expedited free shipping and they have a good, easy to deal with, return policy.
I have purchased plenty of problem free W.E. products from licensed W.E. s…[Read more]

I generally order my Wicked Edge products directly from W.E. To be clear, there are several good licensed Wicked Edge Dealer websites that sell new, current version, original sealed and packaged W.E. products that are the same exact products W.E. sells and at the same prices. Sometimes these dealers may have products in stock that W.E. may be t…[Read more]

Dwight after cutting my fingertip off my left ring fingertip years ago, I created my first set of Finger Guards/Safety Mods.
Here’s the first W.E. forum post where I introduced my concept/idea for finger safety shields:

I wouldn’t call it a weak spot…it’s hard to concentrate on stone placement, good sharpening technique, and dangling finger tips all at the same time. A physical barrier between your hands/fingers and the sharpened knife edge reduces the chances of cutting your self, greatly, without having to limit your sharpening technique, stone motion or…[Read more]

Dwight, you are correct it is easier to cut yourself with edge leading strokes. It requires a very high level of attention and conscientiousness to avoid cutting yourself, or, to make use of added external safety measures to help you avoid blade contact and cutting your self.
There are several safety methods you can employ. You can wear cut res…[Read more]

Howard, I advocate checking and adjusting the stone set angles with each and every grit or medium change.
With Ed’s micro-angle adjusters it makes this a quick and easy step.
I don’t intentionally attempt to draw a burr with each grit I use. I can say that a burr generally does form as a result of my sharpening technique. My final sharpening s…[Read more]

Welcome TKC. I simply wipe my diamond stones with a dry clean towel. I’ve been using W.E. sharpeners for a while now and this has been sufficient for me. I guess a can of compressed air spray used to blow dust from computers and keyboards could be used.

I sharpened a knife today at 15dps bevel angle using an all diamond stone progression: 400, 600, 800, 1000, then new version 1500, 2200, 3000, and last I used the old version 1500 grit diamond stone. I saw no discernable difference between the scratch patterns imparted with the recently released 3000 grit diamond stone and the original version 1…[Read more]
