Chuck, I only advocate using the steel stock to break-in stones when there are high spots or clumps of abrasives your looking to knock down or even out. The sharpening experience you gain through continued sharpening use of your stones can’t be replaced. As you continue to use these stones you will learn how to discern through the feel, (i.e., t…[Read more]

Roy, it may be possible that your sharpening took away enough steel that your after sharpening readings were about 0.5 degrees more since the edge is now essentially lower. Since you marked the guide rod positions and verified they didn’t shift the only other guess for an explanation may be possible the knife settled slightly lower in the vis…[Read more]

First, Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum, Tim. I would do some of both for those Kramer knives. Let me explain.
I’d use the sharpie to determine your “sweet spot” position for each knife in order to clamp them in the most efficient sharpening position with your WE130. I like to clamp the knives in the blade’s center in a manner that levels the k…[Read more]

You’re attempting to remove the finest, almost unnoticeable, equipment and mechanical errors. I think you’re loosing site of the human errors we are contributing that are far greater, IMO. These human error contributions are something we can reduce with proper care, better technique and more attention to detail. Remember this is a hand op…[Read more]

Mike , it may work the opposite for you. Maybe you have more control with your left hand side and right hand side pushes heavy. Either way, by paying closer attention to your progress all along the way you’ll be able to balance out or better maintain your bevel heights before you get done with the sharpening process. I never asked this si…[Read more]

Mike, anything you can find at your hardware store that will slide down onto your guide rods but stay in place are stone stops. I found rubber washers at Home Depot on the plumbing aisle in a faucet repair kit. Cheap and effective.
Are you right handed? My right dominant side with more coordination, efficiency and strength, yielded taller be…[Read more]

Have you disassembled and removed the square angle bar and put a straight edge across it’s full length to verify that it is bent? Maybe use a level or carpenter’s square. Or, are you just assuming the angle cube readings are showing you it’s bent? Without verifying the square bar for straightness, you are just guessing. If you determine the…[Read more]

Phillyjudge, one zero, one time, for everything. This allows you to set all angle settings relative to that one zeroed position. Then all the angles are all relative to the zeroed cube and to each other. Use the zeroed cube to set both your guide rod angles to profile and sharpen both knife side bevels to that relative angle, with each ot…[Read more]

Roy, the inscribed angle demarcations on the WE GO are just suggested indicators. If you want true angle settings, use you properly zeroed Angle cube. Loosen the guide rods locks and slide them in and out to get as close as you can to get to hitting your angles with the cube.
The WE GO is a simple basic equipped sharpener. It is not equipped t…[Read more]

5/3 then 1/0.5 should be good with good pressure and technique. Realize, mirror finish is a process from the get go. Each grit has to be used in succession to the optimal results with attention to detail. Strops will not remove deep scratch remnants from previous grits.

All knives that are ground like a triangle that slope in to the tip from the spine up will cant or lean left in the Standard Vises. Only a knife ground with parallel/vertical sides above the spine or a parallel vertical patch in the center of the knife’s sides, (like a double edged knife) where its is positioned and clamped in the vise, will not…[Read more]

Richard, 4µ / 2µ is where I’d start. If you don’t know, it’s recommended that you reset the sharpening angle to 1.5º to 2.0º lower angle, for stropping.
For example if you sharpened at 20º, strop at 18 or 18.5º. Also stropping is done with more applied pressure then the light sharpening pressure.

Richard, when using the strops it’s always an upward and off direction for your stropping strokes. I suggest you do not attempt anything but the shortest knives in one long stroke. Especially if the knife shape curves down to the tip. If you try to do this as one long stropping stroke you can easily gouge and slice the leather. It’s better to…[Read more]

They use hot glue to mount it to the plastic paddles. The old gouged leathers will peal off easily enough and the glue residue can be scraped off.
Richard it won’t hurt to use the sliced strop. I suggest to keep using it for now as you acquire the proper technique. Then after you ge…[Read more]

The WE100 uses the Standard Vise. It is comprised of two triangles. The left side triangle is fixed and stationary while the right side triangle floats and is connected with a horizontal screw to the left side. Most knives are shaped like a tall narrow triangle. When the knife is clamped in the standard vice, with the blade up, the knife sid…[Read more]

Welcome to the forum Craig. Please share with us which model W. E. Sharpener you are using.
The situation you are describing sounds like the blade lean seen with the “Standard Vises”.
