I have found this discussion to be very thought provoking. I have never considered where on the stones I have been placing my fingers.
So I went and picked up one of my diamond stones. I apparently put my index finger near the top of the stone, with my other three fingers and my thumb on the bottom half of the stone. This just seems like a na…[Read more]

Thanks for the input.
Ironically, my sharpener has never gotten noticeably dirty. It has always been kept really clean. My thinking is that this is just the result of two aluminum parts being forced to press against each other while moving. The wear on both components is identical.
I still have the small cylinder of foam in place that tc…[Read more]

I have a WE130 that I bought about a year and a half ago. I sharpen 15 – 20 knives a month.
When I took the sharpener apart for cleaning a couple of days ago (I keep the mechanism really clean), I noticed identical lines of wear on the top of the cam lobe and on the bottom of one of the vice jaws (see the attached photo of the cam lobe).
Has…[Read more]

Probably due to my inexperience, I have been unable to find any discernible difference between two identical kitchen knives that were finished with either 1000 grit or 3000 grit diamond stones. Both will easily slice through newspaper (thanks in large part to a recent suggestion from MarcH to remove any wire edges by finishing each and every…[Read more]

As silly as this might sound, I have had a lot of success using blue masking tape and a short piece of cable tie. I tape the piece of cable tie to the spine of the knife. This approach makes it much easier to position the knife above the depth key, given that you can rest the cable tie on the depth key while you clamp the knife in the vice.

Thanks! I will definitely try this approach. It makes perfect sense. If I use good technique, I can see how I can have the apex angle and refinement that I want, and no wire edge.

I think it would be safe to assume that there are folks who don’t participate in the forum, or who are unaware of this thread, who have had problems with the grit numbers on their paddles.

I have read several posts on this forum and other forums regarding different ways to remove wire edges and burrs. The method I am currently using employs edge-leading strokes with the 1.4 micron Micro Fine ceramic.
The 1.4 micron is the last stone I use in my progression, and although some folks have suggested using a coarser stone for this task,…[Read more]

I used this roller ball pen to replace the numbers. I have found the oil-based paint that it uses to be resistant to various solvents, but it can be scratched off. However, it is tougher than the original numbering. I used the Extra Fine point ve…[Read more]

The packaging that your guide rods came in looks identical to the packaging that my 12” guide rods came in. My 12” guide rods came directly from WEPS.
The length of the threading on both my original 10” guide rods and my 12” guide rods is 3/8”.
If I run a finger nail up and down the sides of any of my guide rods it creates what I can…[Read more]

Thank you, I really appreciate your comments.
I do have a microscope, but I may have to acquire better lighting and a microscope that is more convenient to use so that I can more clearly see the condition of the knife’s bevel as I progress through the stones. But, if possible, I am trying to avoid unclamping the knife in order to use the mi…[Read more]

I recently purchased the Micro Fine Ceramic stones as a way to reduce my use of the Diamond Lapping films, and thereby reduce the recurring cost of the films. I am sharpening kitchen knives, some are Henckels and some are of lower quality steels. My current grit progression for touch ups is – 1000 grit diamond stone (50 per side), 1500 grit d…[Read more]

Thanks for the info.
I know this will vary from knife to knife, but could you estimate how many passes you think it might take for the 1.4 micron micro fine ceramic to have the same affect as 20 passes with .9 micron diamond lapping film?
Thanks

I have been sharpening my kitchen knives using the diamond stones progressing up through the 1500. After the 1500 stones, I have been giving each side 20 strokes with the 9 Micro Diamond Lapping films.
I recently purchased the Micro Fine Ceramic stones, mainly because they are not rapidly consumable, and the cost of new lapping films is adding…[Read more]
