No. I cleaned the knife with denatured alcohol prior to sharpening. Went thru all the grits and a couple of strops. It couldn’t be adhesive residue.

This is an unused blade. Only chemical I used on it was alcohol, to clean it, Do you think I can grind past it or is it thru and thru? Although I’ve had it for a few months, I’m thinking I should return it before I go any further.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on with this edge? It’s really sharp, but when I looked at it under mag, this is what I saw…

The handles have a small amount of play on the rods, which results in a slight rocking motion, pivoting on the knife bevel. That rocking will rest either on the top of the bevel or the bottom. Trick is to consistently have the stone surface contact at the top or the bottom and not rock from top to bottom or vice-versa as you move thru your…[Read more]

Ya…you’re on about that. There is a slight rock due to play in the handles. For me, I seem to get the most consistency when I hold high on the handles, so when I apply pressure during the stroke, it’s always applied to the top of the handle. With a leading edge stroke from heel to tip, when I reach the tip, I’m at the top of the stone. W…[Read more]

That’s kinda what I figured. With an edge leading stroke at the heel, the bottom of the stone makes first contact. When I move to films and strops with an edge trailing stroke going from heel to tip, the top of the stone makes first contact with the heel. About the only way I could figure to make the strokes contact similarly would be to st…[Read more]

Guess what I’m trying to explain here is that with edge trailing strokes from start to stops, I get pretty even contact on the bevel. With edge leading, when I switch to films and strops, the contact changes, so have to spend a lot of time cleaning up with films and strops. I’m wondering if that’s usually the case for others or not?

I know Terry has a similar thread that I could have posted in, however I didn’t want to hijack his thread, so I’m posting this thread. I had been using edge leading strokes, heel to tip, for some time now, however I always had a problem once I switched to edge trailing strokes for films and strops. It seems bevel contact with the different s…[Read more]

Terry, I found the same thing. Add to that, variances that occur whether your stroke is leading edge/tailing edge, heel to tip/tip to heel, scrubbing/full strokes, working the blade in sections or taking full strokes and combinations of all those variables. Right now, I’ve settled on holding near the top of the handle, trailing edge, heel to t…[Read more]

Im sure those with more knowledge will chime in. I was thinking the same thing when I first started using my new 1500/2200/3000 stones, but I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results and still am. There’s enough grit with the 1500s to make short work of the 1k grit lines and on down to 3k stones. I’ve only a few knives so far, but th…[Read more]

Ok. Problem is, like everyone, I can’t find any.

I’ve been using denatured alcohol to clean knives and clock parts, as well as in some wood finishes. I just found out yesterday that it can no longer be sold in or shipped to CA. What can I use instead? If isopropyl alcohol, then what %? Ethanol?

When I use the Tormek to establish a new angle, translation to the WE is pretty darn close, with the exception of this knife. It’s a clamping issue for sure, as the finished edges turned out great. They are as even as my eye can see. I just didn’t know if this was a common issue or just my own problem.

Well, like I said, they appeared to be the same, as my eye could tell. That said, I could be wrong by 3* I guess.

I have a model WE130 and I do use an angle cube to set angles, so I know that’s pretty accurate. Again, I did reset the clamp several times to make sure the blade was as close to vertical as possible, but that’s the only place I could figure there would be error.

This is a Ganzo FB762. Usually the Ganzo knives have been very nicely beveled at the factory, however this one came with less than optimal bevels.

So, normally, when I mount and set my angles, I set one side to match the existing angle, then just set the other side to the same angle, then start sharpening. The bevels always turn out matching, to my eye. On a newly purchased folder, the existing bevels were so messed up, that I decided to re-establish the angles on my Tormek to 25*. The To…[Read more]

NorCalQ replied to the topic Best Stropped Edge At 14/10u? in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 4 years, 9 months ago
Sure am learning a lot here. Turns out I was rounding the edge with a combo of too many strokes and not quite soft enough stroke force. Now I’m using only about 20 to 30, ver, very light strokes, from 5u on down. I also reduce the angle by a degree, just to get more of the bevel, without rounding the edge. So far it’s worked out well, how…[Read more]

I’ve got an old version of the T8 that I got years ago and am still using. I’ve updated some of the features, but keep meaning to update more when I have the chance. You can do all the bells and whistles as far as wheels go, but I find the basic wheels are plenty, especially if you have a WE. I tried and tried to get the same results with th…[Read more]

Gee…this is perfect for a Tormek, which is why I kept mine. Every time I have to change an edge angle, the Tormek is pretty accurate when set up properly and gives a good, new starting point. Short of that, I know others will chime in.
