I found a little thing recently that might help out on this if you dont want to use wood. A felt block. The folks at chefknivestogo.com sell what they call a rock hard felt block. Not sure how well it would work for the lower grit burrs, as I mostly use it starting at the 600 grit. So far it hasnt torn any chucks when it takes the burr off. I run the edge though it about 2 or 3 times. I have used it for a couple of chiself grinds, but to be honest, I did most of the work on those starting around the 800 grit as they were touch ups. It’s not the end all be all, but I have found that it is useful, espically when doing high polish edges. Hope this helps.
05/11/2016 at 11:36 am #33970MirrorEdge; I agree. I just recently start using an old Gillette saftey razor. lol. Just dont trust myself with the straight. lol. Last year I might have sharpened straight razors every now and then. Now I am seeing several of them every few months. Guys in the 50’s and up going back to them, and guys in their 30’s, 40’s switching to them. Taught a couple of them how to sharpen and stropp their own razors. For me, went to buy a pack of the Gillette cartridges I normally use and realized Im spending about $20.00 for 4 cartridges. I might get 4 shaves per cartridge. Walked away and instead picked up a puck of shave soap, brush, and shave mug. lol.

05/09/2016 at 7:42 pm #33957MirrorEdge, I agree. The guy has taken really good care of it, though a water leak found it and some rust started to form. Date wise for it, some time between 1930’s and 1950’s. Doesnt really narrow it down I know, but I’m leaning more to the 1930’s early 1940’s for it. Lately I’ve started getting more old, and old style razors brought to me for sharpening. This was the first Rolls Razor though.
05/08/2016 at 1:02 pm #33934Got to do a little work on this, mostly cleaning and then sharpening. Rolls Razor. Pretty niffty little thing. Early version saftey razor. For sharpening took the guard off and used the water stones up to 10k, then stropped. The razor, handle, hone, and strop are built into the case using the built in handle to push the blade on the hone or pull it on the strop. I didnt use them for sharpening as they are pretty beat up. Over all was fun to work on.

03/11/2016 at 10:49 am #31875OK, so a couple of days worth of work. lol. Cold Steel tanto that looked to have had a bad time with a belt sander. Was told I could do whatever I wanted, just try and make it look decent. Stripped the remaining coating off the blade, took out what I could of the rough spots with sanding though some were so bad I just didnt want to remove that much metal which lead to an idea. Acid bath, and brass wash. Then sharpened at 25dps. In the end, happy customer. lol. Sorry very pic heavy.

02/24/2016 at 10:25 am #31553Thanks! Thats quite the compliment from you guys. That is an older Tojiro DP that belongs to a local guy runing a great little hibachi place near me. Great food. Curry Custom; I did it by hand, no grinder, or belt sander. A couple of different hand files, then on to the diamond stones to finish shaping the tip and thinning it out. I used wet sanding up to 3K to blend it all. Some of the deeper gouges I wasnt willing to try and take out due to how deep they were, so I just tried to smooth them out some. Then sharpened up to 5K with the Chosera on the wicked edge. I have to admit I was suprised they wanted a 50/50 split for the edge, but thats what it came to me with and what he wanted. I have a Misono 440 petty from him that Im about to start working on for him. I have to retip this one as well, though its not as bad as the last one. This one will be sharpened at a 70/30 split.
Sorry, in my rush this morning I forgot answer about how long it took me. Start to finish about 5 hours, though to be honest there were several coffee breaks, and distractions that I had to stop and take care of, then come back and work on it.

02/23/2016 at 9:28 pm #3154202/09/2016 at 12:23 pm #31049Looking at the last mock up it seems starting at the number 9, the numbers sort of fade in with the vise. I really like where this is going, and have several knives that get brought in to me that this would be a big help. This has more than likely been hit on already, but making the pins for the guide key a little longer. Using the pro pack 2, some of the knives I sharpen just barely fit the vise. Will the current guide key still work with the new Advanced alignment guide? I am making the assumption that the new guide will be a little thicker than the current ruler. Thanks.
02/09/2016 at 11:25 am #31043Curry; Nice work! Great work on the wrap as well. I havent really done anything all that intresting as of late, just run of the mill sharpening, except for one. I recently did a review and write up of the RatWrox MRX, spent two weeks beating the crap outta the knife. I was so impressed this one is now my EDC. So, spent some time to polish up the edge a bit.

01/27/2016 at 10:56 pm #30798I personaly think Elmax has better edge retention than the S30V. I have two knives that are EDC in Elmax, one Ultratech, that has been getting used for just over a year now, and one Troodon that is my wifes EDC/work knife. Everyone’s daily use may be a little different, but for mine the Elmax has been able to keep an edge better. Though I do keep mine sharpened at 20dps. To be fair I only owned a knife with S30V steel for a month or so, just before getting the first Elmax blade, so have had much more time using the Elmax than the S30V.

01/07/2016 at 4:57 pm #30436Being able to look at the sketch, I like it. I think this would help alot with a few knives that I tilt when it comes time for touch ups. The card being clear with the markings colored is a great thing. Count me in on this one. I think size wise what you have sketched is pretty much there, but thats just me.
Geocyclist; I did the same marking of the ruller that came with mine.
