Me too! I hope the low angle accessory comes out soon!

04/19/2012 at 2:04 am #2829Disappointing, but thanks for the update! Please keep us posted.
04/18/2012 at 11:46 pm #2827I’m really waiting to see this too!
03/27/2012 at 11:01 pm #2214Of course there are a thousand ways to get a good edge. So follow this method:
You decide to go with the 1000 diamonds, followed by the 1600/1200 ceramics.
Next, you want to go to strops with 1 and .5 Micron Diamond Paste.Given the above, would you go with leather or balsa strops?
01/18/2012 at 4:57 pm #1389Tom, thanks for the excellent and informative answer!
It sounds like ZDP-189 and other abrasion resistant steels might best be tackled with the WEPS by using the diamonds down to 1000 grit (7 micron) and then the 5 and 3.5 micron strops. Perhaps adding the 1 and .5 strops for a really fine mirror.
Would going “diamond all the way” like this reduce the chance of carbide popout? Because the diamonds would have a lesser chance of abrading the different hardness’s unequally? And perhaps the strops (as opposed to stones) would lessen the chance of carbide popout?
Or do I have it all wrong?
01/17/2012 at 2:19 pm #1379Thanks for the answer Leo! So do you think that the harder and high-tech steels like ZDP-189 are better with diamonds, and the more conventional steels are better with water-stones? Or is it more complicated than that?
Hope the surgery goes well for you my friend! Insist that they use something sharp. :cheer: Have some Lagavulin on hand for your recovery! Best wishes, my friend!

01/17/2012 at 11:39 am #1375Call me dense, but I’m just looking at the Grit Comparison Chart here on the WEPS site. From the pictures, the stropped edges look to have a better polish than the water stones. So why get the ceramics and water stones at all? Why not just come off the 1000 diamonds and go to the 5 and 3.5 micron strops? Then go to the 1 and .5 micron strops if you want an even better polish.
Or am I missing something?
11/18/2011 at 5:23 am #874Any update on the Acute Angle Accessory that will allow us to sharpen at reduced angles on fillet knives, etc? I was just wondering basically what it will look like and how it will work. More importantly, how will it install on the WEPS? A rough idea of when it will be available and ball park cost estimate would be nice as well. B)
11/08/2011 at 12:28 pm #823Well, I can’t complain because I haven’t ordered yet. Still saving my money for the Pro-Pack I’m going to order. I’m hoping to get that 20% discount though. Does anybody know when the discount is going away? If we can get just a few days notice, I’m sure I will be able to convince my wife to let me pull the trigger. She hates missing a sale!
10/18/2011 at 3:09 am #709The Shaptons sound nice. But I don’t see them on the WEPS website. How much are they and how are they paired up on the paddles? Or can you order the grits that you want on each side of the paddle?
10/05/2011 at 11:32 am #622Ah! That’s why I like this forum! Thanks Leo and komitadjie. We must search for this mysterious purple compound. Amazon has it. 🙂
Yes they do but they were going to charge me $25.00 US to ship me at less than $7.00 tube of it. I shall have to get someone Stateside to buy some for me and ship it at a normal price.

Amazon treats our northern friends rather harshly! I always get “free shipping on orders over $25”. I always keep a few things on my wish list so that if I want to order something small I can add more to my order to get the free shipping. Reading the fine print, I guess Amazon doesn’t offer free shipping outside of the U.S. Bummer!

10/04/2011 at 8:56 am #604I have a small Spyderco kitchen peeling knife with a half-inch width blade at its widest point. I need a very narrow bevel on this knife, but was unable to get below about 18 degrees or so. I tried a narrower angle, but ended up scuffing up the tops of the clamp…

Hmmm…well…I’m still waiting for details on the new “acute angle accessory” or whatever it winds up being called. That will cure the WEPS of this problem, which is the last remaining WEPS issue of significance, IMHO. Still, the WEPS is pretty awesome just as it is.
10/04/2011 at 4:13 am #600Ok, I’ve been following this thread with interest. I’m still waiting for the fight to get dirty. 😉 Come on now! This is a love fest so far! Which is really better, Chosera or Shapton? Or is it REALLY just Coke or Pepsi and it doesn’t matter? All I can gather is that the Choseras might be more refined (at a given grit) because of the additional slurry and the Shaptons are perhaps easier to use because they don’t need to soak. Any other differences of note?
Also, how are the Shaptons paired up on the other side of the WEPS blocks? For example, is the #1500 Shapton paired with the #1000 or the #2000?
Lastly, I don’t see the Shaptons on the WEPS site. Do we have pricing for the Shaptons yet? If not, do we have an idea that they will be about the same price as the Choseras, or will they be significantly more or less expensive? Are the Shaptons available now or do we have to wait?
09/23/2011 at 2:10 am #486Really, for us much older, more delicate gentlemen, a more sophisticated elixir like Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch would be preferable, while puffing on a Mpntecristo cigar. In the background some Bach organ music like the Toccata and Fugue in D minor. Ah perfection.
Leo
Great Leo! Bach organ music is great for the sharpening process! Lagavulin 16 year makes for a truly wicked edge! If you don’t have any Lagavulin, Laphroaig cask strength is a good substitute. I’ve got both and I rotate them, just in case. 😆 I’ve given up on cigars, though. Wife and kids hate them, so I just buy more scotch instead.
