My shun is a sg2. Mainly because I held all excpect the revesered line and the fuji fit my and the girlfriend hands the best.
Like others said carbon steel should take an edge very easy compared to the power steels.
08/17/2013 at 8:35 am #14253While I don’t have any proof at this point =) Think about it… dunking your blade in a bucket of water while using it (post heat treat) with a belt sander is a pretty common practice, otherwise you WILL over heat it if you are doing any serious amount of metal removal or reprofiling (which you would be to put the final edge on it post heat treat). It may or may not be the case, but is an interesting theory none the less.
I took a relook at the you tube video of Bark river knives shop tour. The showed the employees dipping the knives in water while putting the edge on then.
But while searching, the act of destreesing a knife is usually a heat treat process called “normalizing”. Where a forged blade is softened to allow the initial grinding to take place. What he is doing isnt de stressing the edge, as the original edge metal is long gone. How can u de stresss something that isnt there
It would be interesting to see the results of a Rockwell hardness test of the new edge. Maybe the initial heat treat wasnt done properly on the first batch of knives. Or they surfaced hardened the knife edge in properly but the initial heat treatment was correct and the countless sharpenings made it past the surface harding.
08/17/2013 at 7:05 am #14246Where is the proof that they dipped the blade in water after grinding. Thats a ridiculous notion. I would imagine that would get one fired at a knife company.
I have heard reports of the s30v chipping. And it is a pain to sharpen both benchmade and ZT. It makes since that the edge could have been overheated when grinding. As it takes me 2-2.5 longer time wise to sharpen s30v compared to 440c.
08/12/2013 at 1:58 am #14087I have only matched a few angles. Mostly I have reset the angles, in belief that the will be happy with the end result and when they need it touched up I can easily set the angle and save time on touch up making the customer even happier. I have been setting most things at 20deg per side witht the angle cube.
I go from 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1600. I stop there and if they want it stropped I charge a little extra. Most customers will never benefit from it. Most ppl dont own a knife worth more than $20.
Time wise I spend around 8 to 12 minutes on a average blade. Cheaper chinese knife once I get the angle set I dont spend a lot of time progressing up to the ceramics.
08/12/2013 at 1:22 am #14086This is a great topic. Is there anyway to restrict this to business owners? I see there’s 9 members and 600+ guests on right now. I don’t really want to be sharing business ideas with the casual sharpener that does it for change on the side. No offensive but i don’t want to give out a roadmap of everything I’ve done just so someone can do the samething in a fraction of the time and undercut me
I wouldn’t see hiding this necessary. Marketing in today’s world is on so many ppl minds, that it can be easily researched. The small one man shops of any service or product need marketing. though this site give specific info, any person can go to the library or surf the Internet and find what we will say here that is knife specific. Also it varys quite a bit regionally what type of marketing u do. Being in the Indianapolis area, yahts and fish markets and river side restaurants dont exist. While some ppl cater to those industries specifically. unless you feel your neighbor is going to take your business, I dont see it as an issue.
08/11/2013 at 7:56 pm #14069I have no intention of making this a business to support my self9. I just want to buy my knifes and sharpening products, but I do need some marketing for this. This is what i have done.
I have 3 of the 6 marketing items.
I made cards on the home printer with the help of avery paper products.
I made a face book page.
I do have a few videos on youtube.
I did post a Craigslist add.
The face book page is free and easy to manage on a android phone. Lets you constantly update where you will be. And post pictures of your latest sharpening efforts.
07/08/2013 at 4:27 am #13132I moved alot as a kid, but lived in eastern Hendricks county all my adult life. Its the county west of Indianapolis, Indiana.
07/06/2013 at 1:41 am #13074I just ordered the vise jaws and the screw kit. It was very reasonably priced. Call the sales staff they can help you out.
07/06/2013 at 1:30 am #13073…. I do not use scrubbing strokes ever if I can remain patient . When I run out of patience when re-profiling at the lowest grits (100 in my case)I will use scrubbing strokes. From then on it is sweeping strokes heel to tip until I go to 2K stones and above.
I believe that scrubbing strokes are counterproductive if the goal is edge refinement. The method allows for faster material removal, but is really unnecessary after you have apexed the edge with a lower grit. You are also sharpening the blade in sections when you think about it. If you watch Clays videos, you will see mostly sweeping strokes. I believe that using sweeping strokes is a significant part of the design rationale for the WEPS……
This.
On the Bradley, once I removed all the marker I alternated strokes back and forth. Never doing the same side twice in a row. It was also very fast doing this. I confirmed the bur before I started the back and forth, full blade sweep motions, but that was the only time I did. The best mirror edge is not ontained but it is still reflective.
07/05/2013 at 5:01 am #13051I cant copy paste using Android platforms. I could before.
No matter where I try and paste, it always puts it right after the first letter in the first sentence. This post started with “I can’t” it would put it after the “I” no matter where else I try.07/05/2013 at 4:15 am #13050I wouldmlikemto the roo or nano cloth form the 1.5 and .5 strops

07/04/2013 at 4:52 am #13032Do you have to remove the chisel to remove the bur? Or can a stone fit underneath?
