12/11/2016 at 3:02 pm #36191I will post some of the other posts written by forum members below including my own. These will give you some ideas and keep you busy for awhile. I like the cheap USB option the best. You can find them on Amazon within your budget.
- Jewelers Loupe or USB Microscope
- Ever wanted to measure and view the edge profile of a knife?
- Extended depth of Field (Image Stacking)
Enjoy!
Thanks. Interesting, informative reading. I started this thread in an effort to put information under one roof and to assist myself and others in deciding whether or not to go down this road.
I’ve always been utility minded and a properly honed 1500# grit edge certainly gets the job done. While I keep knives and guns clean and maintained, I buy them to cut and shoot. They all have to work for a living and aren’t the least bit babyied.
At this point, a USB scope in the $60.00 range will more than meet my needs.

12/04/2016 at 5:23 pm #36143I pried open my wallet and ordered a set a couple days back. Should arrive by Tuesday or so. Looking forward to trying them out.

11/29/2016 at 6:35 pm #36100I bought two pair of WE blank stone handles, 3/4″ double sided tape and, from a local hobby shop, a piece of balsa .125″x .75″x 36″. I’ll see how this works out and post the results.
This works just fine. A 1/8″x 3/4″ x 36″ piece of balsa costs about 2$ and a 1/8″x 3″x 36″ piece is about 4$ for an obvious savings. Length of the strips for the handles needs to be 5 7/16″ and can be sanded to fit. Found some 3/4″ wide double sided tape and I was in business. The balsa is the Revell brand and has been very clear and flat.
Denatured alcohol and gun cleaning patches are great for removing the stropping compound and fine sandpaper over a flat surface takes the balsa down to virgin wood when necessary.
It would be very convenient if our favorite knife sharpener company offered the balsa strips along with the tape.
11/20/2016 at 6:42 pm #35909I’ll have to look into that. It doesn’t necessarily have to be balsa either. Every type of wood seems to have it’s adherents.
Ok everyone, what’s your favorite type of stropping wood and why? Curious minds want to know.

Even poor quality steel should sharpen well enough if you’re only going to 800 or 1000. The big difference is how long the edge lasts. I bought a Kershaw Shuffle a couple of years ago and it was just awful – wouldn’t hold an edge even after light usage. I doubt if it was harder than maybe RC45. Touching the blade to anything solid left a dent in the edge – no exaggeration. I disassembled it and heated up the blade with a propane torch, then quenched it in warm salad oil. I’m sure I didn’t reach the proper temp and for sure I didn’t hold it there long enough, but the result was a big improvement in edge-holding. I sharpen a fair number of kitchen knives for friends and relatives. I used to give them the whole WE treatment, but from now on, the cheaper knives will get the quicky job. I have a pedestal buffer with dual extended shafts. I’ll put a 600-grit greaseless wheel on one side and a buffing wheel with 4 micron diamond grit at the other. If there are no serious dings or chips in the blade, I can have the knife sharpened and polished in about 40 seconds. It’s amazing; knives sharpened like this will slice through newsprint with no effort. You just don’t want to look at the edge with a loupe or microscope. Kind of like watching a butcher make sausage. I do a little more to clean up the knives. With the same buffing wheel, I’ll polish the handles and try to remove stains, scratches and tarnish. The owners think they’re getting the knife returned like new and sharper than when new. And it only takes a minute or two.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Agreed. You can put a sharp edge on an aluminum letter opener, although “Why?” would be a good question.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Any knife properly honed to #1000 is beyond the experience of many people and is perceived as almost miraculous.
11/19/2016 at 11:01 am #35894Probably not poor quality steel but inexpensive and ill suited for the application. There’s a lot of that in the low end kitchen knife market.
11/19/2016 at 10:53 am #35893That would be my Zero Tolerance 0566BW. It’s proven perfect for my EDC needs. ZT knives are precision made, high quality pieces. Some don’t care for the Elmax steel but I can’t find anything to complain about.

11/11/2016 at 9:44 pm #35785Does that law actually protect anyone’s safety?
Sure. They protect the health and safety of those that mean us harm and pay no attention to laws.
11/11/2016 at 9:23 pm #35784Back in February, Wisconsin (Scott Walker and both houses being Republican) passed a bill to repeal all prior concealed carry knife laws, except that those prevented from having firearms are also prevented from carrying knives. So I immediately went to Amazon and ordered a Spyderco Stretch. No longer limited at less than 3 inches.
I like the way things are going in Wisconsin of late.

I know what you mean. I moved from Oregon to Massachusetts a little less than a year ago. I was reading up on the knife laws here and in some towns you can’t carry a blade longer than 2 inches. Regardless, my current employer doesn’t allow any kind of knife at work, so I only get to carry on the weekends.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Many people in Massachusetts don’t like knives or guns. How ironic that the people of Massachusetts were the first to fight for freedom and now many of them can’t wait to give it away.
11/10/2016 at 7:39 pm #35766Not in SC! You can walk into walmart w/ a bowie strapped on your leg LOL
Same in Arizona and you can bring your gun too.
