Marc H replied to the topic Newb DLF question in the forum Abrasives 6 years, 2 months ago
Alternating, edge leading stroke are always my last or finishing strokes with each and every “sharpening” stone. If I then progress to lapping films or strops these require the edge trailing, ” up and off” direction strokes to prevent cutting or gouging the medium.
The very last thing I do is use strops in an edge trailing, up and off stroke, fo…[Read more]

Aaron, I’m sorry to hear your frustration. Let’s step back and start at the beginning. Maybe we can help you to use a technique that’ll give you better outcomes. I say “a technique” because how I sharpen and how “Organic” or “tcmeyers” uses their WEPS may differ from how I use mine and all three of us achieve very sharp knife edges. We are all…[Read more]

It’s a great diamond stone. You’ll be happy with the results. It has almost no break-in period. It’s also a good grit leading into a progression with lapping films.

In my experience for the PSA lapping films, (pressure sensitive adhesive) are one time, apply them and use/leave them till they’re used out. If you remove them they tend to stretch out and can’t be reapplied. The non PSA may be different. Depending on how you attach them to your platen they may well be removable and used again. Just like Cli…[Read more]

Lapping films are essentially used the same as you would use strops…only edge trailing up and off strokes.
Here are a couple of links to you tube videos:

Adrian, I see you’ve been at this for years and years so I’ll assume it’s not a technique issue and your stones must be broken in. For a polished mirror bevel, I think you’d do better transitioning from the full progression through the 1000 grit diamond to the 1500 grit diamond stone paired with the 6µ Diamond lapping film on the glass blank s…[Read more]

Marc H replied to the topic sharpening a meat cleaver in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 6 years, 2 months ago
Michael I would still have a go at like I replied the first time you posted a thread questioning how to sharpen the knife cleaver.
It is clear now from the pictures it’s truly a “meat cleaver”. The only thing different I will add now, knowing it is an older used meat cleaver is to say that I doubt the existing bevel can be used as any reference…[Read more]

Drew I use the Floureon Digital Protractor DXL360S, as does tcmeyer, I believe. It has the specs claiming it is the most precise gauge, with the lowest resolution. I cannot say or claim it is as fast or as easy to use as other devices I have used also, those with very good results, too. I used the Wixey WR300 Type 2 for a long time with good co…[Read more]

ditto strops…big difference, especially if doing paper slice test. Are your stones broken in yet? That can require 10 or more knifes sharpened with them to see them come around.

The other necessary tools, IMO, are a lighted magnified device and a safety device. I use a USB Microsope with a laptop computer, but a lighted hand-held micropscope, or lighted jeweler’s loupe will work just fine. It all depends on what you’re able to spend. I also use safety devices like these. I like the safety shields. After cutting…[Read more]

I used that exact Wixey model, for years. I liked it’s easy repeatability and stability. It’s a good device and easy to use. There are more precise units. They are also more expensive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the precision and results you’ll see using the Wixey. That being said, yes, an angle gauge I believe is an absolu…[Read more]

Drew, remember the angle setting of your bevel is “relative” to that knife individual knife clamped in that orientation and that specific position in the vice jaws. It is a relative angle not a true or real angle. All that matters to match that angle again is consistency. It truly doesn’t matter where or how you place the magnetic digital cu…[Read more]

I would begin by removing the damaged steel to expose an edge of fresh steel. This can be done using a coarse stone, hand held, used perpendicular to the knife by running it along the edge top and in line with the length of blade. If the damage is severe, I have used a metal file in this method to spare the abuse on my W.E. sharpening s…[Read more]

dmsaez, What’s your apprehension? Share some of your concerns with us. Maybe we can help you through it. We have alot of practicle experience here. No one will judge. There is quite a learning curve, to using a Wicked Edge System. I like to say using a WEPS it isn’t simple. But it isn’t too hard either.

I place the cube in the same position relative to the stones, and hold the stones in the same position relative to the knife edge, on both knife sides, each time I measure and set any guide rod angles, for consistency. For me the cube is usually even to the top of the stone. Remember our angles we measure are relative angles of the knife’s b…[Read more]

Drew, just to add this, even though the tolerance of the stone paddle handles on the guide rods are pretty tight, by changing your finger placement and applied hand pressure along the paddle handle length, from holding it by the lower end to holding it by the upper end, while sharpening in each 1/2 º angle setting, this too will help blend your facets.

Chris there was another spam I don’t see on this list. The first time I saw it posted was quite a while back and I let it stay not sure whether it was spam or not. It never got replies. Then recently I saw the exactly same worded post again from the same member. This recent time I marked it “spam”.

Not to be argumentative Josh, but I think it’s more like the Field & Sport combined with a KME or Edge Pro type stone. I’m sorry to see it in the marketplace, but it is in the Czech Republic. I don’t think it’ll effect WE sales, in it’s marketplace. I’m sorry to say this but it does look’s like a decent concept.
