Cool, but how many times do you use a magnification of 400 times?
I bought an old Olympus Tokyo stereo microscope an couple of years ago with both double eyepieces and a double objectives and it provides me with (excellent oldschool optics) a clear view in 10x or 20x.
With a second set of eyepieces I can magnify the object 15x and 30x.
In most of the cases, with good sharp white light, 10x is enough.
The stereo-image provides a excellent widefield image, in which you can recognize scratchpatterns, chips, rolled edges, dull spots, pitting and more.10/25/2013 at 1:50 pm #15474Hi, thanks for the compliments, love it, much appreciated :cheer: As promised, a couple more pictures. The project is done and I finished it by installing a brass grip on the drawer. It is partially milled in the front. One more thought crosses my mind; to make the drawer fall in the cabinet in stead of letting the front of the drawer stick out and cover the cabinet. (I know, I know, I sound like a perfectionist, sorry…. )
On request a picture of the bottom. Indeed I used four large rubber pads on the corners to avoid slipping. Even without the weight of the drawer and stones the system is heavy enough, believe me.
One more advantage of raising the system is that I (I am almost 7 feet tall) can ergonomically better use the sharpener. Higher on the table is better for me 🙂
The two holes in the bottom are to access the screws of the WE mounted on top of the cabinet.
The two-component plastic coat has set for a couple of days now and the system is ready to use.Enjoy, any questions let me know!
:silly:10/20/2013 at 6:56 pm #15394Cool!
🙂10/17/2013 at 5:13 pm #15343Yep, definetely grinning 🙂
The saga continued last night. A friend of mine came by for dinner and he always carries a Caly 3,5 in VG10 steel (Spyderco). I have the the same knife, but in Aogami super blue. First we sharpened his VG10 in 19 degrees, second the Aogami in 17 degrees. Both knives are sick-sharp now 😛 Can you imagine I even didn’t try stropping yet? :pinch:
Especially those more special steeltypes are a treat on the WE. You can totally enjoy all the fine properties those steels have to offer. It is a matter of pushing the limits of steepness of the angle 😉
Cool side, oldawan, is the kangaroo and nano-cloth his WE-contribution?
10/12/2013 at 1:10 pm #15275Thanks Mark, very interesting article 🙂
10/10/2013 at 7:17 pm #15251Thanks again, well I guess this concludes this topic for me for now. It is time to deploy and use the unit; I ordered sofar the 800/1000 set and both ceramic sets. The last of these will drop in the mail today or tomorrow. Next will be some stropsets to fully follow all your welcome and wise advices. I will be back. For now I will dive in Curtis thread, thanks :cheer:
10/09/2013 at 8:44 pm #15242Thanks for the great advice sofar guys, much appreciated! 🙂
I am sorry but I do have some questions left;
1. Is the step from 1k diamond (7 microns) to the 1.4.6 micron stones not too much?
I mean; does it make sense to sharpen with a ultra fine stone after 1k diamond?
That justifies the 1200/1600 stones :huh:2. Leather/balsa-strop vs same grit stones; what is better to achieve mirror polish?
(for example 1.4.6 stones vs 1 micron stroppingstuff on balsa/leather)Thanks :silly:
10/04/2013 at 9:59 pm #15139Thanks guys for the warm welcome and compliments. Leather gaiters for the joints. 😛 Possible, I have had my first sharpening experiences with the system and will learn myself to blow the joints out with compressed air after use to remove gritparticles.
I am very happy with the apparatus and the setup. I chose the starterkit with only 100/200 and 400/600 stones but that’s ok. I already orderded additional stones (800/1000 and 1200/1600) and with those I already are as far as Spyderco UF stones in microns.
Additionally I would like the 1,4/0,6 stone-set some blank blocks and compounds. I made myself my own comparison grittable comparing all interesting stones and now know (in headlines)how to build up my set.
I will finish the setup with stropping blocks, sprays and componds. Any experiences already with nano-clothblocks?09/30/2013 at 10:20 pm #15087I knew :cheer: I had seen your name on the dutch messenforum including that avatar.
Thanks, just stepped in WE world. Been sharpening my knives for over 15 years know. I was mainly using the ceramic rods and stones of Spyderco.
recently I wanted a more sophisticated system and finally I chose the WE. The main reason for choosing the WE is the fact that I can fix the knife edge up and work it two sides at a time.
I chose the basic set with the 100/200 and 400/600 and coming time I will learn and try it out.I will purchase more stones.I made the base of oak (to answer your question) I just mounted the WE on it after I applied two layers of Danish oil on the wood. 😛 I will post some pics coming week.
Cheers,
