The blended bevel reminds me of digital audio, when you have enough frequency sampling points it begins to result in a near analog recording…

Tim aka (Tom), I bought the 12″ rods with my initial purchase. Are the 14″ rods an aftermarket product or did you make them up?

I think thats an excellent hypothesis TC…makes me wonder if “microchipped edges” are more likely to occur on more brittle(?) or harder(?) steel blade edges…regardless your explanation is logical.

Thanks Peter, well thats an interesting observation/experience. Makes you wonder if the abrasive slurry didn’t add a bit of something to help smooth those out.
I just pulled the trigger on my WE130 system with the xtra 800 and ultra fine 1000 diamond set…but there is a nexus with your story…I love my “organics” so I’m going to be adding a few…[Read more]

Thanks for the explanation Clay. I do like the idea of recycled materials but they don’t always work out in the ways one expects…The granite base is sweet but weight is a consideration in my particular case (not much in the way of workshop space). I have looked at hardwood cutting boards as a substitute but the time, energy and $ involved really…[Read more]

Thanks Expidia, its just interesting they don’t show them available on the website itself. Comment duly noted and appreciated Re: aluminum base.

While I’m over here I keep playing with my order cart and evaluating accessories so I can order without hesitation as soon as I return to the States. Yesterday I happened to notice that the paperstone base option I wanted doesn’t appear to be offered any longer. Did I miss something?

The premise being that I don’t plan on going any finer than the WE 800/1000 diamond stones at this point…down the road? That’s another question. After watching Clay’s and Curry Custom’s videos on stropping I’d probably decrease the stropping angle from chosen bevel angle by a degree or two.

NickedEdge replied to the topic Chosera 800/1000 in the forum Abrasives 6 years, 8 months ago
Simply on the basis of numbers:
Chosera 800/1000 are 14 micron and 11.5 micron respectively while the
WE 800/1000 are 12 and 7 micron.
Its like calling a critter by it’s common name vs it’s scientific name. There can be two of them with the same common name but they’re an entirely different genus and species using scientific class…[Read more]

Remarkable job, thank you! Do happen to recall the size of the hex/Allen wrenches needed for the disassembly? Also there was a foam piece (cylindrical ?) made mentioned of earlier in the course of the thread. Is it no longer used? or was it simply removed as was also mentioned/commented on. Again wonderful job.
My only comment would be an…[Read more]

Clay’s way ahead of my questions Marc. By about seven years I’d say! Lol. A YouTube vid from 2011 where he uses and chats about the Naniwa Choseras that they apparently offered at that time (but no longer do). I think, by extension, his comments about whetstones support/supplement your responses and my own resulting epiphany.

LV Sorry to have drawn you in on this one. I suspect given the age of the thread (last December) the issue has been resolved by WE (as is typical of their customer service business model) and/or at least addressed by the participants to Graphite’s satisfaction. My apologies to all concerned for having inadvertently raised the dead! 😉

Marc. The basis for that comment about the durability/life of the Glass Shaptons was Mark over at CKTG whose experience seems trustworthy. I can see where the type of steel used would have an impact.

Okay I think I have it… The abrasive runs through a glass like matrix which does wears slowly down (but much slower than a typical whetstone). As a splash and go theses stones do not require being soaked to assist in the release of the abrasive and therefore the formation of a slurry to do the cutting. I seem to recall seeing these stones being…[Read more]

Just so Organic.
When that term and its implications (don’t waste your time, effort, and money) were presented to me my reaction was “well wait a sec here pard….” As I said I like things to move thorough food as easily as possible not simply because its safer but because its a joy to prep when the tool in hand sings.
Up to this point I can’t…[Read more]

Interesting, so the shapton Glass are more like the WE diamonds in that their (very resilient) abrasive is on the surface as opposed to a homogenous matrix that runs throughout the “depth” of the stone?
