Here are two examples of light boxes (See Below). One is a custom made ‘”Box” and the other is a commercial light cube/tent. Both work equally well with the correct light bulbs. If you want to hold the blade at a specific angle I use green (Or any odd color) “Play Dough” and then clone your photo over the the green in post production. The Knife will appear to float in space, have little or no shadow and your bevel reflection will be clean and bright. Watch this video if you want to see a example (Click here). Creativity is the key.

04/24/2017 at 6:38 am #38635Since the release of the WE Lapping Films, I only use the strops for “convexing” edges or making a “convexed bevel”. Basically, I place multiple facets on the blade and then blend them together to form a near perfect convex with a strop and diamond paste. This is a very effective technique and you can see Clay performing it on a Chris Reeve- Sabenza (Click here for link). The flexibility of the strop leather is what allows this to work so well. Give it a try! I think you will love the result.

04/20/2017 at 8:47 am #38550Guys, your missing out if you haven’t tried the lapping films. They save some time and provide a outstanding finish. Often times, one doesn’t need to start at 50 and can skip directly to 400. Only for the worst of edges would you need to start at 50 even 100 0r 200.

04/10/2017 at 3:15 am #38293Wow! We keep getting deeper into this “rabbit hole” each year LOL! Aaaaa, the pursuit of the “perfect edge” is addictive and almost like a drug….. We all need help.

+1(682)777-162204/10/2017 at 2:23 am #38292Yeah, I’d love a gen 3 pro without the stone holders
This is why I got the Field and Sport Pro (Gen 3- Vice). I can clamp the base to anything I wish to adjust the height to my liking (Click here to view photos). I also like the flexibility of being able to adjust the rods independently for asymmetric angles. The case it comes with is perfect for mobile applications as well.

+1(682)777-162204/08/2017 at 7:43 am #38255Do you worry about heating up the cutting edge with the belt?
Nope, Not at all. That is the most common response I see. Almost every knife edge on the market was “birthed” on a belt grinder. The adjustable speed offered and modern structured abrasives available reduce the risk of heating up the blade enough to destroy the temper. Of course, if one wants to destroy a blade, they could do it pretty quickly on any of these machines. The blade never gets hot enough that I can’t touch it.

04/08/2017 at 2:52 am #38249How do you use this deionized water, particularly to get metal particles from the air? With one of these devices or in another way?
Prevention is the key! I generally follow Clay’s instructions in this video (Click here-Metal Dust Capture) , however, I use distilled water instead of tap water. I make my own with a product from Waterwise (Click here for link). They also happen to manufacture and distribute a desk top Air purifier which some may be interested in (Click here for more). I have gone to distilled water for everything I clean these days. I even use distilled water in a ultrasonic cleaner (Click here to see My device) . To learn more about a ultrasonic cavitation (Click here). In the US we can purchase distilled water in the automotive section. They sell it in grocery stores as well, normally, adjacent to the bottled water.

+1(682)777-162204/08/2017 at 2:13 am #38247I think the worksharp has it’s place for some tools, but I don’t like it for knives
There’s some evidence of the belt work
for the reasons indicated. It’s too aggressive and I don’t trust the angles at all. However, for quick damage removal with intent, it works just fine. All of these tools have a place in the arsenal. Grind it on the work-sharp (With Blade Grinder Attachment) and refine it on the WE. I have chosen the AMK-75 to speed repair and to provide precise cutting angles. I then take it to the WE after all the evidence of the lower grits is removed. The different grit abrasives for the 1×30 are tremendous these days and you can swap the belts quickly on the AMK. They have structured abrasives, diamonds, felt and leather. This allows one to virtually eliminate any repair “Evidence” before putting on the WE. For me it’s become about the time I spend on each blade. I like the flexibility that these two systems offer. I can burn through my work quickly with outstanding results or I can slow down, take my time with the WE without the need for power. I needed to add; Sharpening is a different “animal” than blade repair (Grinding bolsters, Tip Damage, major edge defects, re-profile work, etc.). I use both of these systems for different procedures. Blade repair AMK, fine edges and shiny edges WE. The combo is just amazing.

04/06/2017 at 1:16 am #38175“sharp knife is safer than dull knife”.
It’s funny you said that, I just read this statement in U.S. government policy and thought to share it. The “Sharp knife is safer than a dull knife” isn’t a “Slogan” it’s actually a O.S.H.A standard for tools that are supposed to be sharp (OSHA3080-See Attachment if the Web Admin lets me). Straight off the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (O.S.H.A.) website (In the U.S.). I don’t think most restaurants, barbers, or salons in the U.S. have considered this (Enjoy).

04/05/2017 at 6:30 am #38158I agree, the Tormek small knife jig is a winner! I use it like Josh based on his recommendation last year (Note it works on my AMK-75 as well). Basically, it holds the knife handle and gives you the flexibility to sharpen all of the unusual blade geometries (Click here to view a video). Instead of mounting the small knife jig into the Tormek SVM-45 you mount it into the WE clamp (This is just brilliant). At times, I will also remove the blade from the handle and scales and clamp at the “Flat” pivot point of the knife. However, the Tormek jig was the perfect inexpensive solution that works well and protects the knifes manufacturer warranty. You must use a angle guide, to ensure the blade “Flat” is perpendicular (90 degrees) to the clamp for the WE angle guides to be accurate. (Best of Luck)
