I’ve said it before, but that’s a great post, Curtis. It makes it insightful why straight blades not mounted horizontally are sharpened at the same angle.
Yet I often choose to mount a blade with its spine on both clamps, simply to ease repeatability. (I only have the “old” ruler and not the newer plastic measurement device. This will, however,…[Read more]

Mark76 replied to the topic Is there a long knife clamp/holder? in the forum Getting Started 7 years ago
Yep, 10 knives should be enough to have your stones broken in. That does not mean stones that are not broken in won’t give sharp edges, as Marc writes. Even with stones not broken in your knives will probably be sharper than ever.
Another reason to use some beater knives at first is that it gives you some time to perfect your technique.

If it’s relatively easy to (re)clamp, this seems like the ideal position.

Mark76 replied to the topic How "unflat" is problematic with the diamond stones? in the forum Getting Started 7 years ago
I completely agree with Josh. Even if the stones are not completely flat, they will still remove metal from the edge all over. Only the angle may vary slightly, but I think is negligible.

Weird. The functionality is there, but not everyone get an email. And sometimes people get an email and sometimes not (Clay).
Any idea how this works, Chris?
I would like this option to be configurable, if it is possible and not too much work.

I even got a mail when Clay quoted a message by me, which included “@mark76“.
It seems to be working, at least for the mods. And Marc, just a test now you’ve unchecked yourself from the thread: @MarcH

I have never used the KME, I only know it from knife shows and videos. (It didn’t even exist when I got my WE 🙂 .) So take my opition with a grain of salt. But if I were to summarize the differences between the KME and the WE, it would be:
- Angle precision. The WE allows you to set your angles much more precisely (up to tens of mm’s) than the…

Mark76 replied to the topic Knife clamping position questions in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 7 years ago
I agree with Marc. But to answer your question directly: if you clamp the knife very near the handle, can’t you get the edge horizontal?
That said, in general (but probably not with this knife) I try to clamp my knives resting on both pins, simply to ease repeatability. Then I only have to record the distance from the clamp to the tip of the…[Read more]

And again, within 10 seconds of posting the previous message, I got an email. How about you Chris (on two accounts), Marc and Clay?

Well, a slightly different test then. Until now, every time I included myself with @mark76 , I got an email.
Do @cjb80202 , @developer and @MarcH get an email now, too? Apparently it doesn’t work for Clay, but just a test: @wickededge .
And maybe one of the users who is not a moderator could try this, to see whether this feature is restricted to…[Read more]

Mark76 replied to the topic Lapping films effectiveness in the forum Advanced Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 7 years ago
Tom, thanks for your reply. My questions were, simply put:
- Do more people experience scratches or a coarser pattern than expected with the WE 1.0 micron and 0.5 micron lapping films? As far as I can judge with my limited means I don’t.
- If you have used other types of lapping film, do they produce different results than the WE ones? Again, I…

In the past there was some discussion about the lapping films. I’m not sure anymore, but I thought it was about the 1 micron and 0.5 micron films (but it could be the 0.1 micron films, too). Some people thought they were too coarse.
That was not my experience, but I thought I’d try some lapping film from Jende Industries, too (which I got for…[Read more]

Clay, maybe a silly question, did you check, “Notify me of follow-up replies via email” ?/quote]
I had this option off, Marc (I called it “not subscribed”), but I got the email anyway. If I have it on, I get an email every time anyone posts in ghe topic.

Haha, I just got an email with my own above post in which I included @myname. So apparently if somebody includes your name with an @ symbol before it, you also get it by mail, even though you are not subscribed to the topic.

I also got a post by mail that included @Mark76. On other forums that sometimes means you also get the post by mail or a notification by mail.

Mark76 replied to the topic Chips in Edge After Sharpening? in the forum Main Forum 7 years ago
Are you sure the chips weren’t there before you started sharpening, Eric? A loupe or a microscope can be a good friennd.
As you noteed the stones are not broken in yet and that is a likely reason. In order to minimize that effect, try not to put too much pressure on the stones and used edge-leading strokes as much as possible.

My experience is that the nanocloth itself does very little. It is with compounds that it gets its value.
