I talked with the maker of the knife, Ferrum Forge, which is 2 brothers, 1 of whom is extremely knowledgeable about this material and he suggested that I send it in to their recommended sharpener, but I’ve got a WICKED EDGE and that’s not about to happen. So he said to make sure and keep the stones clean, cause they will fill up quite quickly with the SM-100 material.
Also, if you know nothing of this material, you might look it up, pretty wild. I remember before I bought this knife, I read on the Ferrum Forge website about all the troubles they had with making the blades. It’s pretty unbelievable stuff.

04/18/2019 at 8:00 am #50235I need to clear up my 1st post, I said that I bought a gen 3 pro pack back in 2015. I was wrong, I bought the gen 2 pro pack, but I did upgrade the vise to the gen 3 late last year. So looking at Expidia’s photo he posted, it looks as if I lay my setup on its side, as opposed to putting it in upside down as I did with the original vise, and maybe cut the foam or order new blank foam, it might work. Now my question is, will the granite base be to tall on its side. If so, maybe I could get one a little smaller made around here in Oklahoma to make it work along with new foam. I’m just trying to find some solution so that I can bring my WE on my travels because sitting in the motel for 1-2 days waiting on the railroad to deliver my equipment is so extremely boring and would love to spend that time sharpening. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

07/16/2018 at 9:27 pm #46955Hello Doc Todd. Good to see another okie on here, I’m in Edmond. Like the ones before me have all said, there is a learning curve and it can take as much time as you want it to. I do my sharpening in the morning, before the kids wake up and before I have to head off to work and I only have 1 hour each morning to do it then, otherwise i’d have to at night and there’s always some honey do’s then. But I put a blade in, and if it’s a brand new one that I have yet to sharpen, it usually takes me a day or 2 to finish it out. If it’s one that has already been in the clamp, then I can look up my settings and have it touched up within 10 minutes.
