I also really like the fact that discussion of any sharpening method is allowed, even if it is a rival product. I love, I mean love, my WE and will never be without one. But I have a lot of convex edge knives and Japanese knives that I prefer to sharpen by hand. I have learned a lot in my few months on this forum and, for better or for worse, have been sharpening knives for over 40 years (started young

04/27/2014 at 3:52 am #18437Good advice, that was my error when I first started, felt a burr then switched sides. Now I test the whole length of the blade and work the sections that do not have a burr until they do. I also started (based on forum advice) using a ‘frizzed’ Q-tip and if you drag it up against the side of the blade you can easily feel it catch if there is a burr. No catch, no burr.

03/30/2014 at 5:26 am #18011Yeah, absolutely great posts. I have worked much of my life, and I am 62, to perfect my craft in many areas, fly tying, fly casting, precision shooting, motorcycle maintenance, … One of the reasons I posted is that I love the WE system but do not want to lose the craft I have developed over the years. These posts, particularly those of LeoBarr, jendeindustries, and Eamon are basically what I needed to hear. As I have gained experience with my cheap knives and worked up to my better, though not best knives, I am achieving edges I could not have dreamed of before. I love the WE system. But I do not want to lose the years of practice I have put in on freehand. Your posts really helped to put it all in perspective.
I just sharpened a Hinderer that I gave my son on the WE. He is a drilling engineer and really uses his knives, I mean uses them. He broke the point on the knife and I restored the point using the WE and put an edge on it he could not believe. Made me feel good. What a great system!

03/22/2014 at 5:24 am #17894Hey thanks for the post. I am new here but have similar issues with arthritis and those mods look great. I also sharpen a lot of fillet knifes and that long knife brace is something I really need. I searched under Will Chan but did not find him, do you have contact info, if that is allowed on this forum?
Also, I really like your sharpener base. Is that marble or quartz?
Thanks,
Tim
