Jacob, it can be misleading using the sharpie. IMO it’s a good guiding tool to get you in the ball park. Unless you view the knife edge under magnification it may appear your removing the sharpie at the knife edge while really your not quite there. You’re really not apexing the edge.
Several things will prevent the sharp edge your used to…[Read more]

Peter, Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum!
DO NOT use “Simple Green“. This is one of those products Tom mentioned above that will loosen the adhesive and remove the stones!
I have, probably accumulated three sets of diamond stones that I have purchased and used over the years. I have never cleaned them or washed them in any manner. All I do i…[Read more]

Ian it is a “give<>take” situation. Yes the Gen 3 Pro helps you apply convex bevels quickly, easily and efficiently. But it falls short in other areas.
The WE130 allows you to apply a larger array and variety of edges. All your regular “V” grinds, along with, asymmetrical and uneven ground bevels, easily. But it will take a lot of time, eff…[Read more]

Tom, thank you for the time and effort it took to make this very informative and illustrative video. And thank you for your service.
I’d like to comment on Tom’s technique, for Wicked Edge users. Tom as he mentioned around 19 mins into the video has physical limitations between his left and right sides. Due to this he has found it to be saf…[Read more]

Grayson, depending on the version, (i.e., how old) the vice and jaws are on the commercial series may effect it’s efficiency. The new version model has the split jaws and the tension adjustment features on the vice backside down near the base. This small silver lever/knob, you can rotate from the “-” starting position, clockwise to “+” p…[Read more]

Aaron, break the knife down and work your strokes in smaller sections. Maybe do your knife in two or three portions. It should be easier to correct your technique by working on a smaller portion of the blade. Then overlap the portions to blend then together. Do it this way for any stroke direction you employ until you get comfortable with the…[Read more]

Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum and Sharpening Community Grayson.
Grayson, could you share some info to help us to help you? Specifically, which model WEPS are you using? First we’d like to help you to use your specific clamp model and version as well as you can to achieve the best holding power it can allow. Most clamps on the majority of kn…[Read more]

Aaron this video , also produced by Clay, fits right in after the previous one to show you how and where the “edge leading” stroke fits in.
Between the two videos you should be in business.

Alternating, edge leading stroke are always my last or finishing strokes with each and every “sharpening” stone. If I then progress to lapping films or strops these require the edge trailing, ” up and off” direction strokes to prevent cutting or gouging the medium.
The very last thing I do is use strops in an edge trailing, up and off stroke, fo…[Read more]

Aaron, I’m sorry to hear your frustration. Let’s step back and start at the beginning. Maybe we can help you to use a technique that’ll give you better outcomes. I say “a technique” because how I sharpen and how “Organic” or “tcmeyers” uses their WEPS may differ from how I use mine and all three of us achieve very sharp knife edges. We are all…[Read more]

It’s a great diamond stone. You’ll be happy with the results. It has almost no break-in period. It’s also a good grit leading into a progression with lapping films.

Marc H replied to the topic Lapping films in the forum Stropping 6 years, 3 months ago
In my experience for the PSA lapping films, (pressure sensitive adhesive) are one time, apply them and use/leave them till they’re used out. If you remove them they tend to stretch out and can’t be reapplied. The non PSA may be different. Depending on how you attach them to your platen they may well be removable and used again. Just like Cli…[Read more]

Lapping films are essentially used the same as you would use strops…only edge trailing up and off strokes.

Adrian, I see you’ve been at this for years and years so I’ll assume it’s not a technique issue and your stones must be broken in. For a polished mirror bevel, I think you’d do better transitioning from the full progression through the 1000 grit diamond to the 1500 grit diamond stone paired with the 6µ Diamond lapping film on the glass blank s…[Read more]

Michael I would still have a go at like I replied the first time you posted a thread questioning how to sharpen the knife cleaver.
It is clear now from the pictures it’s truly a “meat cleaver”. The only thing different I will add now, knowing it is an older used meat cleaver is to say that I doubt the existing bevel can be used as any reference…[Read more]

Drew I use the Floureon Digital Protractor DXL360S, as does tcmeyer, I believe. It has the specs claiming it is the most precise gauge, with the lowest resolution. I cannot say or claim it is as fast or as easy to use as other devices I have used also, those with very good results, too. I used the Wixey WR300 Type 2 for a long time with good co…[Read more]

ditto strops…big difference, especially if doing paper slice test. Are your stones broken in yet? That can require 10 or more knifes sharpened with them to see them come around.

The other necessary tools, IMO, are a lighted magnified device and a safety device. I use a USB Microsope with a laptop computer, but a lighted hand-held micropscope, or lighted jeweler’s loupe will work just fine. It all depends on what you’re able to spend. I also use safety devices like these. I like the safety shields. After cutting…[Read more]

I used that exact Wixey model, for years. I liked it’s easy repeatability and stability. It’s a good device and easy to use. There are more precise units. They are also more expensive. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the precision and results you’ll see using the Wixey. That being said, yes, an angle gauge I believe is an absolu…[Read more]

Drew, remember the angle setting of your bevel is “relative” to that knife individual knife clamped in that orientation and that specific position in the vice jaws. It is a relative angle not a true or real angle. All that matters to match that angle again is consistency. It truly doesn’t matter where or how you place the magnetic digital cu…[Read more]
