Thanks MarcH, you’re right I’ve been using the system for a few years now. I’ve had issues in the past but sharpening mostly pocket knives, persistence has paid off.
These 10 knives are 11 inches of cutting edge and the bladesmith has requested a 24 degree inclusive edge, they’ve thrown up a few problems! During one I completed today I went from the final strop back to 1000 diamond stone as I wasn’t happy with it, still not over the moon though. It does look like I’m going to have to invest in some more bits and bobs, do you know of any instruction / demonstration videos for the lapping film? I’m a bit confused on how to use them.

09/01/2013 at 10:00 pm #14594I must say how jealous I am, I’d love to take my WE to various events but people just don’t carry knives here in the UK. A sharpening service has crossed my mind but I think the only takers would be chef’s, I cant imagine a profitable venture.
07/24/2013 at 4:26 pm #13539I was having the same issue Darrell, I think I was rolling the edge due to the slight give that a strop has.
07/01/2013 at 6:30 am #12939I think this was something silly like 13 per side Benoit, In fact after doing this one I noticed I was also taking metal off the clamp itself.
For the normal pictures I use a Nikon P500, the close ups are a digital microscope from a local electronics store.. http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-digital-microscope-with-400x-magnification-286566
07/01/2013 at 3:59 am #12928Hi Benoit!
06/03/2013 at 1:59 am #11929No idea to be honest. I was set to 14.50 left side and 13.50 the other, this produced a bevel as even as I can tell by eye.
I’m about to load up another kitchen knife, lets hope things are back to normal.
06/03/2013 at 1:13 am #11925I have the pro pack II and nothing extra so far. from the 1k diamond it was coarse / fine ceramic then 1.0 / 0.5 paste on leather strops.
I’m wondering if I should change the order due to the Micron size? Is this be what I should be doing?
Coarse ceramic 1.4 micron
Strop 1.0 micron
Fine Ceramic 0.6 micron
Strop 0.5 micron06/02/2013 at 9:13 pm #11912I got there in the end, my cleanest edge yet I think.

06/02/2013 at 7:42 pm #11910Sorry to here about your initial problems, mine came completely unassembled and had to put everything together. I didn’t get the case though so maybe that’s why it was pre-assembled.
Do you have any pic’s of the rubber glove thing? I’ve made no attempt to cover my ball joints and am wondering if its something I should do.
05/31/2013 at 5:31 pm #11872Thanks for the reply. Like everything out of Spyderco’s Taichung factory the knife itself was perfect. I believe it was me that put the uneven bevel on in the first place, this is why I’m so baffled and the angle read correctly.
I’ve tried remounting the knife and removed the second piece of tape I’d used. Also because of the unusual shaped spine the tape had a crease in it so maybe that was causing it to sit a little to one side.
Going to try again this morning, wish me luck!
05/30/2013 at 7:48 am #11849I agree they do look similar, I prefer mine though 😛
05/29/2013 at 8:21 am #11822Thanks! That was one of the many vid’s I’d watched while waiting for delivery. I’ve used electrical tape and its seems to hold the knife very tightly.
My concern though is when I want to return to the knife to touch up and don’t put it back in exactly the same place, would the line up tool not benefit from a few more increments?
05/26/2013 at 9:00 pm #11745Seems me and you are in the same boat John, I just got mine a couple of days ago.
The first knife I’ve sharpened is the Spyderco Bill Moran Drop Point. I wanted to start on a relatively straight fixed blade, I’m pleased with the results but Its not perfect, I’ve alot to learn!
I’d agree with Mikedoh’s advice when it comes to pressure, too much will only cause more scratches to remove with the following stone, this is most evident when you get to the 1k diamond to Coarse ceramic change.
I’m still not sure about the ceramics although, I’m familiar with them (I’ve owned the sypderco sharpmaker for a couple of years) but they seem to produce a ‘smudged’ effect I’m struggling to remove with later grits / strops.
All in all its a pleasant learning curve and a thoroughly enjoyable pastime! I’m having a bash at a spyderco Sage 2 now. (masking tape the pivots / exposed mechanics!)
05/25/2013 at 9:31 am #11715Finally it turned up today! I’m one happy chappy :cheer:
05/20/2013 at 6:06 am #11539I went through the same process Jamey, I’m in Wiltshire, UK. It’s worth considering not only the shipping cost but also UK import fee’s.
These costs combined forced me to look else where, I stumbled across the French dealer, http://www.latelierdutranchant.fr/
The shipping is great and because its in Europe there’s no import charges.
