Thank you Organic. That is a valuable piece of info and exactly where I will start today. Not having a starting point and literally just guessing on the 1st clamp kind of effects my confidence right out of the gate. I will now have a starting point. As I think about your 75% reference to the rear of the clamp I already know that will eliminate the play or deflection in the steel. I ran into this numerous times last night. I knew that couldn’t give me any consistent accuracy when I can see the blade give a little as I made my pass toward the knifes tip.
08/18/2018 at 3:24 pm #47333Ok, thank you. It makes sense and is much clearer now at this time of day, rather after a 12 hour work day and into the 16 th hour of my day. It was the 1st time this knife was in in my WE and I seemed to have become afixated on perfection. I know exactly what your saying here and probably read your post over 3 times ignoring the obvious last night. I think I became convinced there was a problem. We’ll thank you. Oh, I was in the lower set of key holes. No work today and can give my sharpening a couple dedicated hours.
08/18/2018 at 7:30 am #47313Hi MarcH, can you help me with 2 areas I’ve ran into unsuccessful progress? In your process when you are setting up the knife and you can tell the Sharpie ink at the tip has been left on below the bevel, you “loosened the vice and rotated the tip down while keeping the knife heel resting on the one forward key pin” how much do you (let’s use the back of the blade reference) lift the blade off the rear key pin to start? Do you start with very small increments such as an 1/8 of an inch or do you do even less? Like a 1/4 of an inch or more. As you realize the tip needs to be “rotated” down even more, again, what kind of incremental measurements do we use!? Fractions of an inch?
A late attempt last night on a French (chefs) knife, I had no success trying to find the sweet spot as I kept rotating the tip down until I ran out of spine to clamp. I thought maybe the knife was either set in the jaws to far forward (or backward) so I brought the knife back in the clamp (closer to my chest) and started over. After I rotated as much as I could, again running out of spine to clamp, I called it a night and would wait till today to ask.
07/31/2018 at 5:43 am #47077Hey William, welcome as well. I told Bob from Oldawan when i was talking to him on the phone how i had just read your post about you purchasing your WE from him! I ordered mine a couple days later. This forum is like having your own personal hotline directly to the most knowledgeable people in the industry, with archive access. “wicked” cool! I feel more confident knowing the support we have here. I wish you the best with lots of success. maybe someday you and i will be helping out the new members! I’m on the look out for knifes to practice on and help to break in my stones. the kitchenette at work has trove of victims in the drawers and tag sales. Stay in touch, don’t forget to buy band-aides ha ha ..

07/13/2018 at 10:00 am #46894Thanks Organic, I cant find the video that i refereed to. Could’ve swore it was HarleyWood or Simple little life (youtube) but i think i figured it out what they were referring to and your right it must’ve been Gen 1 or 2. Where the style of the blade was not the same thickness along the spine. it was thicker at the back of the blade and it tapered smaller as you get closer to the tip. Wicked Edge newest design with the slits in the jaws eliminate that issue.
07/10/2018 at 10:24 am #46877Hi Marc,
Thank you so much for sharing and helping me along on this journey! I value your opinion (& really do rely on it) and i’m grateful your willing to share your experienced knowledge. You are the first person to suggest, or “if it were me” to go for the Gen 3 set up. Reading that reinforces my confidence in my direction. Out of all the used WE for sales I’ve seen, everyone (except for one) was selling to upgrade so that tells me something. Once you get past the sticker shock and except the fact that your about to spend this kind of money, the difference in price from one set up to the next – better one, makes for really tough decision making. And I’ve read it time after time the regret in not purchasing the right one, spending le$$ only to come back and buy the “right one” anyway. I did remove the Gen 3 pro from the equation. I want the the ability to independently adjust the angles on each side. If i sharpen my mother inlaws kitchen knife shes had for years i dont want to reprofile it if it has 2 different angles. i could but all things considered … I want that flexibility. I have read and heard mentioned on one video something about the new clamping system that i dont understand. As a result its adding to my dilemma. I love the design and simplicity. They talk about shimming one side or using foam tape to keep the blade perpendicular in the clamp because the clamp wont always secure the blade true on both sides. Have you experienced anything like that? or do you know what they are referring to? Another question i have but see no reference to. It seems to me the screws in the vice style blade clamp would become worn or lose the tolerances over time with all that tightening and releasing. Have you seen any wear in any of your systems that over time created some play?
Sincerely,
Bob

07/09/2018 at 1:43 pm #46859Hopefully this link will work I can’t open it at work to try, it’s being blocked, I think because it has “knife” in the verbiage. I am curious to your opinions to this thread. I have and continue to read up on as much information I can. Perhaps there are people who don’t realize there opinions have such an impact on people like me. The money I’m about to spend on my new system is (for me) enormous so I really appreciate the opinions of those who have used the equipment and really rely on those that are there before me. Who would know better?
Planning on getting a Wicked Edge? Before you buy, I thought I’d share my personal experiences with the Gen 1, 2, and 3. from knifeclub
