Of course not, you don’t need that, simple rubs against something with a pass/fail criteria would do it. Why rely on the user (us) to find an old knife or risk gauging an expensive knife ? Its just silly to me.
They must screen these diamonds to size and deal with clumping (which Clay has an official term for), the OEM should have good ideas to…[Read more]

Some of the photos show diamonds way bigger than they should be. I still do not understand why the OEM cannot take care of this for us. We should not have to deal with it. It would be like buying a knife with a burr on it and the first step is to remove the burr.

It would seem that very light rubbing, maybe under water, might help the break in sceario. The effect should be verifiable under a scope. I also wonder why WEPS doesn’t take care of this during manufacturing. It would eliminate a negative on the system. For the $ we pay I would expect this could be taken care of prior to packing.

I was wondering what you guys think about rubbing 2 handles of the same grit against each other to help break in and general consistency.

I do a 17 dps. Alignment guide L3 (the tip is in the middle of the L3 box). Knife is low in the clamp, I call it “bottom” essentially resting on the 2 prong thing which holds the alignment guide in place. I find 17 dps plenty sharp and did not put a microbevel on it. I will see how it has held up next time it is in the WPS. I love using my 250x…[Read more]

Yes, I find closest to the curve is best. Some people reposition the knife (I dont — too much time & blending challenges). I suppose you could also change the angle for dif. segments. I just live with the sweet spot but also like to know what is going on. The angle cube works but it is single axis (must be plumb). I am going to get a dual axis.…[Read more]

My point is that the angle changes on non-straight edges and imperfect circle edges (most knives). If we use an angle cube to verify it then it must be plumb (or dual axis). To me it is important for 1st WEPS sharpening on a knife especially if the angles can change upto 5 dps over the length.

It is a tech way to find the sweet spot for “the specific knife in the video”. However, that specific knife is only used to demo the results of the math (verified by many with plumb angle cubes) as the WEPS handles traverse over the full length of the blade.
You are correct that x is the length of the blade and y is the height of the blade. It…[Read more]

MarcH, While this surely borders on the theoretical there are also some practical applications related to the initial positioning of the kitchen knife (which will then be used in the future for all tune ups and redo’s). Depending upon the initial knife position indicated by moving vertical line in the movie (and pausing it where you want the p…[Read more]

I am aware and have read thru Anthony Yan’s great analysis and am in full agreement. However, he also points out that very few knives are perfectly “flat” and the curves to the tip must be in the same pivot point radius length for the angle to remain the same. His document has really cool animations (link below). I parsed out a piece of it also.…[Read more]

I have done away with all my ceramics as I find them not necessary when going to the films, even the 9 micron films don’t show much scratch pattern improvements over the 1500 diamonds. Although it is not a perfect science/progression as different steel/heat treats react a bit differently.

I understand, however, when I reach the tip (which is at the end of a curve on pretty much all knives) it is nice to know what angle I am putting there. It seems kinda of silly to use a $40 inclinometer accurate to 0.2 deg when plump and then use your eye to indicate plumb. I know relative et al. but if I am determining somewhat accurate angles (…[Read more]

When using the angle cube do I need to keep it perfectly vertical (like referenced to a plumb bob) in order to get the correct angle ? If so, how do I do that easily ? If not, which position gives the correct answer since the answer changes depending on the cube’s verticalness.

I am trying to replicate the factory single bevel on my WEPS for fun, interest and future fine tuning. It is an Aritsugu 7 inch Deba (blue steel) my son & wife brought me from Japan. It is extremely thick and heavy. The spine is ~0.25 inch thick with a one sided primary bevel ~0.5 inch in width. It is slightly dished on the opposite side. I bou…[Read more]

Does anyone have any suggestions on a cheap audio pickup with software ? MAC’s would probably do it but I am a PC guy. Its not like there is a store to go to and internet searches are hit/miss.

I have the same issue and posted a pic of a possible solution. Being that the WEPS R&D pipeline is somewhat limited, I checked into doing it online. If we submit a 3-d CAD file of what we want we can get some for something like $400 for the first set and much cheaper if we get a set of 10. I also have access to a 3-d printer so if someone (maybe…[Read more]

My input is that personal preference is the overarching criteria relative to finished grit. It is not the brand of knife that matters, it is the type of steel, the hardness (heat treat) and the geometry. There is also a good amount of touch involved similar to brush strokes on a master painting. As silly as it sounds, I say that the feel and…[Read more]

I have used my new Carson and find it a great deal at $37. Software is basic but works fine. Focus knob is full circle and smooth. Pic taking with capacitive button or software. Goose neck holder allows for pretty repeatable viewing between sharpening strokes. It also displays nicely on my…[Read more]
