If I understand you Organic…right on the money! Well stated! If the beginner reads Clay’s simple instructions that comes with the kit, he won’t go wrong. Organic has stated the simplicity behind the using of this rig another way! Good stuff!
09/19/2018 at 3:46 am #47665Hi TC old mate! So good to hear from you and am flattered to be remembered.
I love your new mod with the numbered dial. This rig would even better than the original one we both received from our mysterious benefactor. I envy people like you with machining skills and savvy. Well done sir! I wonder how many of the original guys are still here.
Anyway, so great touching base with you and the forum again. I will drop around on occasion, meanwhile be well and best regards my friend TC. Mitchell out.

09/18/2018 at 2:57 pm #47646You can see in the picture I posted above that the device to lock the angles and to extend clamping on a long knife blade, is very sturdy. I will add also that it was beautifully machined. I wish I could remember the mate’s name who designed and built it. Maybe he will see this picture and come forward.

09/18/2018 at 6:26 am #47626I very seldom check the angle after each grit paddle. It certainly doesn’t seem to bother how sharp my blades get. By the way, awhile back a member of this forum developed a unique locking mechanism that fits on the rig and as well allows for the locking in of a very long blade. I forget the chap’s name but for a hundred dollars I got a rock solid guarantee that my angle rods will never go out of alignment plus long blades now do not flex on me as I work. One can do no better than to follow Clay’s instructions that comes with t he kit. He does not recheck angles I believe and neither do I. I will try to put up a picture of my locking rig improvement when I get a chance.

09/18/2018 at 1:06 am #47620I have been using the WEPS for nearly, well almost since Clay started the company and I love the results I get. Here are a few tips that will work. First I always start raising the burr with my 80 grit paddle. This is the only time that I apply any heavy pressure to the edge. I do one side of the edge first with an up and down movement using fair pressure and check it with a ball of cotton all the way along from the heel to the tip of the blade. You will see the cotton threads catching on the burr. Then I do the same with the other edge of the blade. Once I am assured I have a good burr and only then, I start working up the various grits. Here is where I will make a strong emphasis…after the burr caress the edge as you work…do not apply pressure. Light as a Spring breeze and make sure you are going along the complete edge. Easy does it. I believe you are using 800 grit and that will not give you the best results for sure. There is a lower grit then 80 but that one is only necessary when you have a knife that has been abused and filled with nicks and catches. 80 first and then on up and you will always get an excellent result.
By the way, it makes no difference which model you have…the same principles apply. Ask Clay and I am sure he will agree with this method.
Good luck from an old timer with this fine sharpener.

Leo09/13/2015 at 2:23 am #28853Seems we all the same kind of experiences with the leather strops. My are three years and almost four now and they are bedraggled looking but function just fine with a little quarter inch of paste. You received royal treatment with the new granite base. All in all over the years, I can’t remember when I got anything less from Clay and his crew.
All the best in your endeavours with the WEPS. You are on your way to having the sharpest, most beautiful edges possible.Cheers
Leo09/09/2015 at 12:52 am #28803Looking great mate! 20 degrees a side is fine for a heavy duty knife. I had 21 degrees per side on My ESEE 5 knife/ crowbar 😉
Best regards

It’s good to see you posting again. Have I just missed your inputs, or have you been off slaying dragons elsewhere??

08/31/2015 at 8:45 am #26428Hey Guys
I have had this system a couple months now and this is my cleanest blade to date. Skinned out a Deer with ease! I’m definately addicted to this thing. You learn something a little new with every knife and my technique is continuing to improve. Just wanted to share this because it makes you proud! I’m sure you guys already know this

Good for you mate! Tell us about the deer…where, when, a story, but short! LOL! The more you use the WEPS, the better your edges will be. Experience is the best teacher as they say!
Well done!Leo

01/31/2015 at 8:13 pm #23034You know, the guy actually shows that he has been trying to learn, what is a very difficult skill. I have sent him a message suggesting that he find himself a master to guide him so he can develop his abilities and also direct him in ways of restoring his body and health as well.
The fellow is very young and taken in hand by a martial arts teacher, he could make some good progress. He just needs to develop his mind so he can focus and to center himself and the rest will happen if he wants. It will take time, but I think he does not lack enthusiasm.
I wish him luck.
The fact that he is overweight may makes him seem awkward and amusing, but at least he is trying. Many of us carrying extra pounds might well emulate his efforts to develop himself. I know I sure could drop about 50 pounds and be the better for it, if only my health permitted!Cheers
