Michael Blakley started the topic Uneven bevel in the forum Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 years, 1 month ago
I’m trying to sharpen a meat cleaver that has an edge about 6 inches long and the bevel is long, about 3/8th of an inch. With that long of a bevel, it’s really easy to feel the angle. If I use a metal ruler, the bevel is so long, it almost works like a fulcrum for a lever.
Anyway, the bevel on the right side is at about a 15 degree angle. Th…[Read more]

Stropping Compounds………..
I have 4 strops: 5 mu -3.5 mu and the 10 mu – 14 mu.
Does each stop need it’s own stropping compound?
If so, what is the right compound for each of them and how are you supposed to apply it and how often do you apply it?

Here’s the knife I sharpened today. Hopefully the magnifying glass helped you see the edge more clearly.

Thanks Marc,
So you’re saying it’s not this or that, you’re saying to do both.
That’s the kind of advice I was wanting to ready…simple, straight forward and easy to follow.
I’ll try to take a photo under a magnifying glass of my work and post it here.

This may sound silly, but I really like the look of knife with an edge that has a nice shine or glint to it.
I currently own the stones that are 1500 grit and on the opposite side I have the diamond lapping film (6 micron).
I also have the 14mu/10mu and the 3.5mu/5mu stones with the gels.
So, once I’ve finished sharpening a knife and it’s time…[Read more]

A friend handed me a knife and asked me to sharpen it for him. The blade is severely curved. If the arc of the blade was turned into a circle it would be about the diameter of a basketball. The total length of the cutting edge of the knife is about 8 inches long. It’s made of 440 steel.
The blade is really dull.
If it were a straight bla…[Read more]

Thanks Sksharp!
I have a shunfeng boning knife. It came at a 15°, and it’s insanely sharp, so I’ll be staying with the original bevel.

First, Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions.
So this might be a bad decision.
I am choosing to sharpen all my knives (except for one) at 20 degrees.
My knives are either pocket knives or kitchen knives.
What issues should I be prepared to deal with and lament?
Thanks!

I have a basic system, but need to add the low angle holder. Will the W.E. low angle work with my system. I have the WE100 (along with several additional stones and strops).
Thanks!!

I heard about this method of checking the sharpness of a knife and wanted to run it past you guys with more experience and see what you think.
I took a Sharpie Marker and held it at a 45 degree angle to the desktop., I then laid a knife on the market with the blade perpendicular to the desktop. Then I gently drag the knife towards me, as if t…[Read more]

Hi Marc,
Yes, I have a Digital Angle Gauge and use it every time I sharpen. However, I don’t use an Allen Wrench that came with the package. I use a hex end screw driver to tighten and loosen the mounting jaws.
And thanks for the tip on the alternate mounting systems. I’m looking at them right now.

One of my pocket knives is a not very tall. The blade about 2 1/2 inches long, but not very tall.
When I try to sharpen it, my stones (at 20 degree angle) don’t rub on the knife, but rub on the knife holder.
Is there a work around for this?
I bought a Basic Kit (that’s the terminology by the UPC code).

I bought a Basic Kit (that’s the terminology by the UPC code).
I have mounted it to a granite stone I purchased from Wicked Edge.
Mine looks like the system below except my granite is gray, not black. But the knife holder is the one shown here.

You can laugh at any time. I have used two of the lapping strips, but I can’t tell which stone I attached them to.
I’m guessing it’s the opposite side of the 1500? Is that reasonable? Is the opposite side of the 1500 glass?
Thanks!

Here are the Wicked Edge sharpening stones I have.
100 – 200
400 – 600
800 – 1000
Fine – 1500
5 mu -3.5 mu
10 mu – 14 mu
Diamond Lapping
Question: which is finer?3.5 or 5mu? I’m guessing they are from most coarse to most fine are 3.5 then 5 then 10 then 14, but I may have it backwards.
To what holder do I attach the Diamond Lapping s…[Read more]
