micro-adjusting lead screw slide assemblies.
Awesome! May I upgrage WE60 later to add this feature? Or should I hold on WE60 and wait for this version?
08/11/2022 at 1:26 pm #58063August 15th for the basic WE60 model. The other units will be coming later.
What are “the other units”? Are they based on WE60 or they are totally different?
11/22/2021 at 3:06 pm #57222Thank you Marc! I’d like to see a micro bevel with clarity, not just a scratch pattern. Spending time for fiddling and adjusting is OK. This project is in my bucket list. Something like this image posted by Clay a while ago.

08/09/2019 at 1:10 pm #51476Cutting and slicing are totally different animals.
For cutting the finer is better. Cutting is shaving, chopping, and when edge cuts perpendicular to the material.
Slicing is when edge is moving against material like a saw. The toothed edge is much better for slicing. Even surgical scalpels are very toothy. Toothy edge is better for most of the kitchen tasks (not all though), for cutting rope, for meat processing.
So the final stone grit depends on the material and how you approach it. There is not absolute sharpness. For different tasks you may need a different edge.

10/20/2017 at 12:02 pm #41719Anybody experience with the Dino Lite software?
Dino-Lite software DinoCapture 2.0 also available for free download on website, but it works only with Dino-Lite scopes.

10/20/2017 at 7:12 am #41711The only reason why I like Dino-lite is the proprietary software it comes with (DinoCapture 2.0). The software allows you to measure with the USB camera scope very accurately. ……… The scope referenced above for $100.o0 (US) is adequate for “most” of our needs.
Unfortunately $100 model (AM2111) has measurement toolbar disabled in DinoCapture 2.0. Dino-Lite Basic model AM2111 is crippled. The measurement features are available only in models costing $250 and up. Here is compatibility chart from here
The good news is that Celestron 5MP comes with software that allows to draw angles and shows angle value.

10/10/2017 at 10:11 am #41531One of the things I hope to accomplish with the new grit chart is to include the sharpness results. We will probably have a some sort of legend which will indicate if a knife finished with that grit at n° will:
All those tests are for cutting material accross the blade. Would be interesting also include results of slicing material along the edge. Like distance that blade travels to cut through tomato skin. The knife weights should be equalized to have the same pressure. I am kidding. 🙂

10/04/2017 at 10:39 am #41358MarcH, What is your conclusion with sharpening hard steels? Maybe they are not meant to be sharpened / polished to high grit? Does it retain sharpness if you make it toothy at lower grit? You mentioned that knife was sharpened at quite low grit from the original Japanese manufacturer. If you have more ideas, please continue to post. I’m all ears. Thank you for bringing this topic up and posting your experience.
I wouldn’t bring Maxamet to this discussion since reports about them are pretty contradictory and most likely something was messed up with them. Would be more interesting to further investigate Japanese kitchen knives.

10/02/2017 at 3:18 pm #41330Chrome has more options.
Good to know. Thank you Mark!

10/02/2017 at 8:26 am #41316Thanks, Dulledge. In fact, I have this switched on in Chrome .
I don’t think you can switch it ON and OFF. You can only open it in a new window. Maybe you meant the same thing, I just want to be sure.

10/01/2017 at 10:02 am #41307the idea that people/sites are following you is not appealing to me.
Mark, all browsers have mode that erase all cookies automatically after you close browser window. In Chrome it is called “New incognito window”. In IE it is called “Start InPrivate Browsing”. When you open browser in this mode, the websites see you as a brand new user without any prior history. When you close browser in this mode, all your browsing history and cookies are automatically erased.
This mode is convenient when you don’t like to see ads that has been customized using your browsing history.
The mode is not convenient when you need to be logged in, because you will need to login every time.
09/28/2017 at 8:27 pm #41273I may be wrong, but if I remember right, the preferred edge for the high level knife edge chopping competitions are mirrored polished edges.
You are right. Thank you for pointing it. I was thinking about it too and has edited my previous post. When submitted edit, then read your post. Here is edited part I added above.

Another difference is direction. When material goes accross the blade like in chopping, then mirror straight edge is better. When material goes along the blade like in slicing, then toothy edge is better.
09/28/2017 at 7:57 pm #41271Another example of a wide, tooth-less, polished edge failing to cut as expected would be the skin on a tomato. WTH?
I guess that mirror edge is better to push across very tiny amounts of material like single hairs. If amount of material is more than a hair, then toothy edge is better.
You will not saw tree trunk with very sharp mirror edge blade. Tomato skin is like a tree trunk comparing with tiny hair. You better saw it up with toothy edge.

09/18/2017 at 7:29 am #41121Well, as usual, I got the itch with regard to the magnetic handles idea, so I had to put one together…
Magnets make stone a debris collector. Metal dust will be all over the stone. I doubt it is a good idea.

09/02/2017 at 11:22 am #41035I get more use out of my WorkSharp, which I’ll use to remove a lot of steel in a reprofile or repair job. Now I’ve bought a Harbor Freight 1X30 belt sander, so I’ll probably use that more.
Tom, WorkSharp has Blade Grinder attachment. Belts for attachment are wider and longer: 1″ x 18″ instead of 3/4″ x 12″. Why did you prefer 1×30 ? Harbor Fright is much bigger. WorkSharp is compact. I do not have neigther of them. I am looking for something that can remove a lot of metal fast and is small enough to take with me in a car. I would take it for small vacation trips or to visit friends.
