Once u get the initial burr on both sides with the 100s u should not need to raise a burr again with the other stones. I would recommend that u reduce the number of passes you make once you raise a burr on both sides to about 50-75 using very light pressure, just the weight of the stone. On the strops 15-25 strokes on each grit should be plenty. Also remember, it takes about 25-50 knives sharpened to break in the diamonds. Once u do you will have some razor sharp edges. On the angle issue, try turning your arms backwards on the rods so you do not have to commit to one of the predetermined holes. That along with an angle cube you should be able to get your angles spot on. Happy sharpening!!!

07/08/2015 at 12:38 am #25929I just saw the listing for the GIII clamp on the website. Before I order, has there been any official word on whether or not the new clamp will fit in the existing hard case cutouts?
The G3 will fit in the case but will need new foam which we’re waiting on. We’ve approved drawings and are waiting for a sample to test before getting the dies made.[/quote]
Do u think I will just be able to cut the foam I already have with my case to make it work?

03/01/2014 at 8:41 pm #17500Thank you Eamon! I will give that a shot! Nice to know I don’t have to make so many passes. Oh, btw, I fixed my 0561 myself. It came out great! Thanks for the offer though. I really appreciate it.

02/26/2014 at 1:45 am #17397I have never been able to get hair whittling, tree topping sharp. Razor sharp, yes…but never have whittled a hair. I raise a burr on both sides, then polish through the standard progression to 1000 diamonds, the super fine and microfine ceramics and finish with 5/3.5 balsa and 1/.5 cow leather. Mirror finish, will slice phone book paper and shave my arm, but no tree topping or hair whittling here. I have sharpened around 50 knives so I know my stones are broken in. I usually make about 100 sweeping passes with each stone/strop after raising a burr on my lowest grit only. I am very satisfied but always dream someday I could brag about whittling hair. 🙂

02/15/2014 at 1:44 am #1715230 inclusive would be 15 degrees per side. 60 sounds a bit obtuse to be useful for a folder. For a small edc with good steel your usually always safe with 20 degrees or also known as 40 degrees inclusive. If the steel can handle it you can go down from there.

01/31/2014 at 8:43 pm #16713Thanks Mark. No worries, the knife is still functional and razor sharp! I never thought about treating it like a tanto blade. With a tanto there is a clear mark of delineation between the straight edge and the tip. With this knife, not so much, so I never thought about coming from a different sharpening angle. I believe I had it placed in the vice correctly as my bevel is very even all the way across the blade. Do you have the 3.5″ or 4″? What distance setting were you at in the vice? I will have more practice with this knife in the future as I plan on getting a few more. I love the feel in hand and the blade shape. Solid knife all around and beautiful work of art!

01/30/2014 at 11:18 pm #16702Well, I’ve got one. I wanted to post a picture of the goniometer, but that requires about 4 hands. But the angle on mine is about 22 degrees.
Mark, have u ever sharpened yours on the WEPS? I did last night and it took about a 16th of an inch straight off the tip. It no longer has the same tip geometry. I used good technique and didn’t round the tip but I think the recurve was too much and it clipped it off. Have u had the same experience? Thanks!

01/28/2014 at 9:37 am #16639Your email is not showing and for some reason i am not able to PM you. Do you have the parts #s for the nylon tipped set screws, 1/8″ bit insert and knurled thumb nobs for the micro adjustments from Mcmasters.com? Thank you!

01/28/2014 at 9:07 am #16638Thanks Ken! Super glue seemed to work. I only hope I put enough on, and that its sitting flat(I just put glue on top of old glue and clamped it). We’ll see!

01/28/2014 at 9:02 am #16637Thanks Clay! I stuck it back on per Kenbuzbee’s suggestion of using super glue. It seems to be stuck back on for now. I haven’t had a chance to measure it yet to see if it is straight, flat and level. My only concern other than that is if I put enough glue on, and I guess the fact that I glued it to the glue underneath…:-) if I have any issues with it I’ll let you know. I’m too busy sharpening every knife in site right now! 🙂 This tool is amazing! Thank you Clay!!!
