I decided to get some 5/3.5 micron paste for the balsa.. seems people really like that set up and also really like the 5/3.5 micron strops so I decided I should add that to my kit… Decided to get some kangaroo leather to try with the finer stuff
The description on wicked edge for the kangaroo leather says “These are my first choice when using compounds between .5 microns and .125 microns.”
03/19/2013 at 7:59 am #10320That’s an idea! I have a bag full of those 🙂
Ken
Very nice for practicing different things and experimentation… Like convex edges going to a certain grit then stropping to see the results etc
03/19/2013 at 7:55 am #10319As others mentioned, using alcohol really helps in thinning the paste and getting it to work into the leather. I now use alcohol every time I apply paste.
I will try that next time I add paste can alcohol be used with all of the different types of strops? I ordered balsa ones and kangaroo leather ones.. Just wondering if alcohol will harm those at all?
03/18/2013 at 11:09 pm #10310Yeah.. But I have a couple cheaper knives I dont like that I intentionally dull sometimes just so I can sharpen them back up again
03/18/2013 at 11:06 pm #10309Very nice work. :woohoo:
Did you use anything to keep the blade even in the vise? Puffy tape, mole skin etc.
I have a delica and an endura yet to do.
I just used some orange rustoleum brand painters tape on the blade where it goes in the vice mostly to keep it from getting scratched up
03/18/2013 at 6:47 am #10299Thanks I think I need to work on my technique with whittling hairs.. every time I put one on the edge and pull a little bit it just beaks in half lol… I can rarely get it to actually take shavings off the hair
03/18/2013 at 5:35 am #10297I’d just try working it in a little more… maybe a quick spritz of alcohol to help. (Work from fine to coarse, so if you accidentally cross-contaminate a strop a little… it won’t affect it.)
I clean the edge with alcohol between strops to avoid cross contaminating.. seems to work well for me
03/18/2013 at 5:34 am #10296I used a tip I saw in another thread for working the paste in better.. I took the two strops and rubbed them together to work the paste in.. seemed to solve my problems now they are working great
03/17/2013 at 11:08 am #10282That is the one I use.. works pretty well.. got it as an add on item for one of my previous amazon orders
03/16/2013 at 5:37 pm #10278How did you keep the angle exactly the same between coming off the Wicked Edge and using the Spyderco rods? Are there still plans to launch something that will allow you to mount Sharpmaker rods onto the WE?
I have the standard Sharpmaker kit (no extra rods) and would quite like to try using them if a way of mounting becomes available. Does anyone know what the grits of the regular Spyderco rods are?
Sorry it took so long for me to reply
The spyderco 306uf ultra fine stone is not a rod its a bench stone
It is very easy to tell if you are holding the proper angle with this stone by the way it feels/sounds
03/10/2013 at 4:22 pm #10102Im far from happy with this purchase… The one screw was so thight that while I was trying to work it back and forth hoping it would start to move easier like the other arm kind of did I bent the allen tool that comes with the wicked edge… I expected better than this out of such a high dollar piece of equipment…
03/07/2013 at 5:57 pm #10014Welp my wicked edge kit is waiting at my door step for me to come home from work.. Accessory stones weren’t delivered yet so ill only be able to try it up to 600 grit… Regardless I can’t wait to go home and try it out.. 😀
That’s awesome! Mine arrives tomorrow and I’m counting the minutes.[/quote]
I can tell you right now you are going to love it! even if you only go to the 600 grit stones your knives will blow the factory edge out of the water… I got over the high cost of this system after I pulled my first knife I sharpened up on it (kershaw scallion) out of the clamp and felt the blade.. I could never get that knife sharp on a bench stone because of the recurve.. was no problem at all for the WEPS
:cheer:

03/07/2013 at 9:48 am #10007I did the same thing out of curiosity when I got my first diamond bench stones
03/06/2013 at 3:52 pm #9983Pretty cool the guy made you custom WE stones.. Choseras are probably the best route as far as getting a mirror polish goes (having seen how well the chosera bench stones do)
Id personally prefer to keep away from them with the wicked edge system though.. To much maintenance which is the main reason I chose the WE over the Edge pro
