* I ment 2° lower than apex bevel still scratches it.

Hey, y’all.
Made it to Hawaii. Helping folks teraform the lava. One more month, and I’ll be back in the forum more.
I’m practicing convexing. Love it deep, and smaller bevel sizes are easier to blend. Ground a drawknife into my machete, 1/2 inch convex bevel. Ended up doing 5 bevels: 18/14/12 as large bevels, 16/13 small to knock down the larger…[Read more]

tc, I’ll make a habit of checking from multiple angles from the get go. Strange, it seems so common sense, but it wasn’t automatic.
It didn’t occur to me that everyone else wouldn’t want perfect bevels. I’ll make sure to ask if that’s important to them, or if steel preservation is ideal.
So… I had to read the kitchen knife comment several…[Read more]

tc, I’ll admit there were some in your list that I hadn’t heard, but I just listened to Dave Brubeck’s Take Five, and, man, I can only imagine what flavor that would add to my edges. I’m going to try it. I’ve got 3 different sizes of Opinels that need that drum line/piano mix.
Dig on the “older” stuff. (Old being relative. Walked into a guitar…[Read more]

tc, same for me. It acts as a filler for the space behind my eyes. Same for a boxfan while I try to sleep. I can’t play Raw Hardstyle dubstep, though, because the energy makes me aggressive with my paddle pressure. Ditto about talkshows, podcasts, or movies: focus takers, probably dangerous. Like texting and driving, but with surgical…[Read more]

I would love to see an impressions field where the user can share his/her observations on how a particular edge works for the intended use.
Not sure how that would work unless later additions can be made.

tc, that makes sense. I’ll keep that in mind as a principle of sharpening.
Red, I have no idea what that machine is, or how it works, but if it gives us data, I’d be hungry for it. Is it easy enough to set up and get readings?
This is interesting getting so many different perspectives on this.

Awesome. There is a touch more metal removed from the tip, slight, but there. I’ll try fenaggling it a bit.

Doubly noted.
There was a knifesmith that told me, “The hardest part is getting a new smith to stop hammering after the steel cools.”
Much of my problem is wanting to progress, and forcing myself to stop my momentum for the tedious details.
I’ll keep the music, but I’m still interested in your checklist.

Lol, I was just about to quote you. ”For the uneven bevels, work a little to one side then switch to the other side. Keep going back and forth, a little at a time. As you gain experience you’ll get a handle on how much you can do to one side before you need to switch. Try to keep your efforts more even. For this a visual aid like a lighte…[Read more]

I’m beginning to see that I need a list, written in black permanent marker and taped above my WE. What I have so far are: be sure of the positioning; center your edge; check angle each grit; loupe the bevels at end of each grit; draw a bur each grit; clean blade after each grit; even pressure; watch that tip; and for God’s sake record your…[Read more]

I just noticed that my edge is slightly off center… It’s not bad, and both angles read the same and I can draw a bur off both sides, but the left bevel is slightly shallower than the right. Is that possible? Two bevels of different depths having the same angle and forming a good apex?
I don’t know how I didn’t see it before now. Is the 100/200…[Read more]

Off topic seems like an appropriate place for this. I’m finding a deep joy in grinding arcs, and I lose time, especially after dark. The only way I can guess how long I’ve been at it is by estimating how many songs have played.
Which brings me to the question: for those of you who bliss out to edges with music, what style and favorites do you…[Read more]

So, I’m noticing that my ark on any given grit seems to hang up on the belly (right term? The curve after the flat, before the tip.). My thought is that more pressure means more metal removed and deeper scratches. Just double checking, but I should be ensuring an even pressure along the entirety, yeah?
Thanks y’all.
Sincerely,
Drew

Now, this does work. However, in the mindset of Mr. Taylor, I need more power. I had the opportunity to cannibalize a Dirt Devil, and I should have.
Also, those bristles are from a dustpan brush. Softer and longer will be needed.
Lastly, we already packed the glue gun, but it would have made a better seal than Gorilla Tape.
Lastly after lastly,…[Read more]

I was shopping around for a micro shop vac, and was met with either flimsy gadgets or expensive and bulky options. I needed something light, compact, and, taking the advice from other posters, have a bristles to avoid wiping grit off the blade and scratching it.
After calling around, a gentleman working in an office supply store suggested…[Read more]
