Pps, I went to the Fasteners section of my local hardware store, and the overwatch brother (sales associate) brainstormed this idea for me: bumpstops using springs instead of just washers.
Pack of 6 springs and 4 tight fitting, rubber washers, and I’ve got bumpstops that prevent me from accidentally scratching the knife face, but can purposefully…[Read more]

Ps, I may be paranoid, but I’m raising a bur each grit progression up to 1,500. Sometimes even twice per grit, once in the beginning, once near the end, just to make sure.

Thank you, Organic, and my pleasure. This system is on the verge of sorcery. Beyond my comprehension.
Starmer, I started with 100, and broke in each grit through 1,500 (just knocking off the big grit for ~ 30 strokes, then flipping the paddles and doing ~ another 30). Then I did the 6mu lapping film, followed by 4mu and 2mu on cow strops.

As a rite of passage, here are pics of my first sharpening with WE.
Your guy’s articles and advice allowed me this success. Thank you.
Sincerely,

MarcH, indeed… See, that’s confused me about complex systems for years. Medicine’s based on the assumption that effects can be predicted in any example of a population, but we all know Docs that screwed things up, despite their confidence. I really want to respect your summary, and if your findings are accurate, I’m forcing myself to stop and…[Read more]

You’ve answered so many questions with just that one post… Those are some beautiful guidelines.
You know what? I’ll bet sitting down with the clients like a friend and explaining it the way you just did, (Back when I was starting out, a feller named Meyer put it to me this way: ..), telling them about the search for a perfect and elusive…[Read more]

I do get what you’re saying, as much as I can at this stage. My mind says there has to be some data that’s applicable to all users. If I come to the realization later that recipes for sharp edges are really an illusion…. That’s going to lead me into a really dark, lonely place.

I dig that, but the data doesn’t have to reference the WES at all. Column headers like make, model, steel type, angle set, grit progression, use, and final impressions would be a useful QRG.

Ps, if it’s no longer available, any idea who’s in charge of archiving for the forum? I’d be interested in that data.

Lol, that does sound involved, especially going it solo. (And possibly addictive, depending on one’s personality…) It may take a few months, but I’d like to check into an easy solution. Maybe a Google Drive shared spreadsheet. I’ll bet the computer science dept at WSU or HSU could suggest an elegant solution.
Always more dreams than time.

Hey y’all, Drew again.
Just pulled the trigger on the PPIII. Thank you all on your feedback towards that decision.
Now I’m climbing down the rabbit hole of steel types, uses, and angle choices. I’m sure each of you have a cheat-sheet of commonly encountered steels and their properties. Have you all created a community-shared spreadsheet of…[Read more]

sksharp:
Apologies for the long delay. I took a trip to several states to say goodbye to friends and family.
I like the portable nature of the GO, however, as you said, it would seem the best bang for one’s buck lays in the PP3. I’m planning on removing the back seats and flooring in the rear of the 4runner, and creating a slide-out cargo…[Read more]

Dear floyd,
Ooo, I had never seen one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Once I get my feet wet, that looks like a definite to investigate.
How do you keep from heating out the temper? Little by little, or can it handle wet knives?

Organic,
Agreed, it’d be nice to have something dedicated to wide and heavy work. If the Tormek Adapter does well with what it’s designed for, I’ll most likely keep it for small guys.

Forgot to ask: will the Tormek SKA handle 3 pounds offset?
-
Drew replied to the topic First WE, Ultimate WE in the forum Main Forum 6 years, 8 months ago
Dear Organic,
It’s ~1/2″ at the widest, with it thinning to just under 1/3″, 2″ behind the point.
I’m going to need to look at the Tormek SKA much more closely. It didn’t occur to me that it could work to secure a massive spine. Excellent.
No problem on resecuring the knife 2-3 times. I’m wanting to put multiple angles on it anyways. In fact,…[Read more]

Dear MarcH,
Whoh, that’s a lot of rouge. I like your thinking. Another set of strops to take the bulkwork with rouge, then a sweet, (and financially conservative) finish with the syringe abrasive.
I can see your point on the 50/80. It’s like trying to trench with a hand trowel. Go big and bold with a pulaski, then finishwork with smaller…[Read more]

P.s., on the far side of the spectrum, I have this to maintain. Let me know if it’s even possible on the WE.
I’ve got a Himalayan Imports kukri. 13 inches of cutting edge, just over 20 inches total. It’s got a 1/2 inch spine, and weighs a handful over 3 pounds. I have to use the dowel-and-sandpaper trick, presently, but saw a brother sharpening a…[Read more]

Dear MarcH,
See, the Pro Pack III didn’t list itself as a 130. I’d been eyeballing it, this pretty much cements the decision.
On the 50/80 grit, I’m sold. Have you used those on badly chipped farm blades? Does the speed at removal outweigh the depth of scratches to work out?
Double vote on the Tormek adapter, longer rods, and 1/4″…[Read more]
