can anyone recommend a scribe or something that I could use to mark around the vice while the knife is in  the clamp.  I want to be able to do this so I get the ABSOLUTE same location if I take it out of the vice and put it back in

Why not use the ruler your WEPS comes with? That way you don’t have to make any marks, just write down the settings you use and use the same ones next time.

Almost every knife I sharpen gets logged in my excel sharpening file.  I record: 1.  Which vise I used (I have both setups); 2.  Which of the two key positions I used (high or low); and 3. The distance from the forward face of the vise to the tip of the blade (I make a small Sharpie mark at this distance when I re-sharpen.)  I also record the bevel angle(s) and the grits or film used.

I respharpened a blade this afternoon and missed the distance to tip by 5mm (I was accidentally using the record of a very similar knife).  I used the Sharpie method just to check it and it worked just fine.  This suggests that the fore-and-aft position doesn’t need to be quite so precise, at least for similar knives.

I don’t normally (as in almost never) mount a blade in a non-level position.  By that I mean that I almost always mount the blade with the spine contacting both pins.  When I do go non-level, I’ll also record the horizontal angle of the edge with an angle cube held right on the edge at the heel.  This is made easier by using the DXL 360 angle cube, which has V-notches on all four sides

I use an app called Tap Forms on my iPhone that is a customizable database to record all settings. This database allows you to use a pic for quick reference of your setup. The Advanced Alignment Guide really helps a lot. If you don’t have the AAG the old guide with a ruler will help to repeat position in vise.
