I was just scanning this pleathera of information and thought I could maybe add something. My number 1 reason for creating a micro bevel is to aim the teeth backwards on knives that do mostly pull type slices since I like to do my entire profile from 50 grit up to strops in scrubbing/sweeping motions with the swapping motions heading up and away (teeth faxing forward). For me this is the most natural feeling sweeping stroke but I can’t speak for everyone.

05/04/2014 at 4:02 am #18535Will one of you more experience guys slap a progression chart on here showing what stones you would use starting from 50grit on a complete reprofiling. Would you still use diamond stones and ceramics in the mix? Thanks a lot guys. This info will be much appreciated. I suppose it may differ depending on the desired finish. Im talking about clear mirror. I guess what would achieve the best working finish would interest me too.
Thanks guys and gals

05/04/2014 at 3:17 am #18534I just broke down and ordered the entire set. Yikes. $708 to get them up here in Canada. Oh well they sound like they’ll be worth it. They must be partially made of PANDA.

The course side of my micro fine I’d coarser than my 1200 so I never use it. With the 1200 and even the 1600 I noticed a burr developer after my circles so I just did a few alternating stropping strokes after every 100 circles along each side was complete. I then did 500 strokes total per grout with leather starting with 5 micron and ending with .5 micron.
You have to have your previous scratches with you diamond stones totally erased though. I used a cross hatch method to achieve this.
Good luck
05/01/2014 at 5:54 am #18489call me crazy but I’ve had pretty good luck doing small circles with the ceramics up and down the stone to even out the wear. super light pressure, almost the weight of the stone and nothing more. it’s giving me really good results, and I’ve been starting with the 100’s to do initial profiles quick. It takes a lot of work but by the time I end up on the fine white ceramic it’s nice and shiny. 15-20 minutes with the strop and paste and they are looking very nice.
I tried your small circular technique and it worked wonderfully for me. I also tried lapping film and had no success. I did use a flexible substrates though. I was thinking I would try a solid substrate but after using the circular method I do not see a point. I made the clearest mirror polish I have ever made and I made the sharpest edge I have ever made.
This might have something to do with my diamond stones finally breaking into the point where they are not scratching where scratches are not wanted. I am on knife number 57 and I can finally call the edge a wicked edge.
Thank you very much

04/11/2014 at 6:10 am #18214Thank you very much. I think I am going to try sticking the film to an extra set of stones that I have using foam tape. This may act like the strops. I usually do not reduce my angle when using the leather because I always put a micro bevel on that is 2 degrees more obtuse. I have found that by using the micro bevel I can aim the teeth backwards and I do not have to do that motion which is a more difficult motion for me the whole time I am creating the secondary bevel.
04/10/2014 at 3:03 pm #18201I have all the diamond and ceramic stones along with the strops but have never been able to get a truly clear mirror edge with this progression. Recently I bought some lapping film 6m-.5m and was impressed. After the micro fine ceramics i have been retracing to the 6m film and progressing down to .5m then stroping. Wow. Super clear. The films are quick cutting and ive done about 17 knives so far without needing to replace the strips yet. Ive heard that the same can be achieved with the WE waterstones but i dont have those. Any other ways out there to get a mirror edge
Boy, that sounds like something I would really like to get into. I’m fairly new to the forum so hopefully you get this message. I’m just curious if you had the sticky back film or if you glued it on.
Was it 3M brand? Etc. I know you can get black paddles from WE.Thanks

Did you put the lapping film on the blank metal paddles from WE? Or did you use soft strops? That sounds like it would be a lot less work. Thanks

04/10/2014 at 10:32 am #18194That was supposed to say erase not u raise. I was using voice to text. Definitely listen to Razor Edge Knives and Hence industries. I’ve learned a lot from their posts.
Cheers
