Steven:
Are you saying that you are doing \\\ with one grit, then ////// with the next? And then seeing a difference in the apparent facet?
Is this only happening with a particular pair of grits? If so, I’d infer that the two different stones were working slightly different angles. A change from high on the bevel to low on the same bevel could be a angle difference of only 0.1 to 0.2 degrees. This can be caused by only 0.010 to 0.020″ difference in the thickness of the stones.
Do you have a set of Variable Stone Thickness Adapters?
Tom,
No, unfortunately, I do not have the VSTAs. I’ve been meaning to order some but things are too tight right now financially.
It really only seems to happen at the 800/1000 grit level, and I’ve long assumed slight +/-variations in the stone thickness and pressure were the culprit(s)… And I’m pretty sure my 800/1000s are toast after only 6 months of use… Which irritates me.

05/31/2015 at 5:34 am #25711I go this way ////////…then I go that way \\\\
I still struggle with this when going for polished edges. It seems like when I’m doing \\\\ strokes I’m hitting more of the apex. When I’m doing ///////// strokes I hit more of the shoulder. The result is a bevel with a few facets. No good.
05/20/2015 at 8:40 am #25652I love seeing all these awesome knives I want but can’t afford, especially when it’s taken one step further and customized just for the heck of it. It’s like a guy posting a picture of his shiny Corvette… Oh, wait! That just happened. π
05/18/2015 at 11:37 pm #25633Josh’s video on mounting daggers…
05/16/2015 at 12:01 am #25605What’s the story with these scales? They’re awesome!
05/15/2015 at 11:56 pm #25604What is neat? Gun, knife or jig?
All of it but especially the jig :)
Yea me dig the jig! :silly:
05/15/2015 at 11:36 pm #25603So stoked about this… While Clay and the team have been going through their shop transition, I will be going through my ownhere shortly!! I currently am working out of an 8×16 enclosed trailer, so this will be SOOOO nice, and I can build a proper paint booth for Cerakoting =) This just got in yesterday… 12×40. I still have a ton of work to do before I can move in though… frame out paint booth and small room for my new air compressor, wire electrical, insulate, install mini split AC unit, etc hehe…
I’m stoked for ya, buddy! And I definitely look forward to seeing all the progress as it comes!
05/15/2015 at 7:18 pm #25597but my personal preference is the lapping films on glass…
Yeah. I have to say I’m right there with ya, bud.
Any suggestions or opinions?
Maintenance is essentially nonexistent in terms of cleaning and lapping the surface(s).
05/10/2015 at 11:44 am #25562I would go about it a bit differently
Zamfir’s answer makes SO MUCH MORE sense. If I need to keep mucking things up so that you guys correct me, and ,therefore, reveal all your secrets, so be it. I’ll happily leap onto that grenade.
Great! What GREAT visuals!
05/10/2015 at 8:31 am #25553Nope, none to speak of it seems. But, your question inspired me to play I around with clamping this knife… even though I don’t actually own this knife.
Again, I don’t own a ZT 0900 so this is literally my first shot based upon what I see. I normally wouldn’t clamp a knife with that much belly so far forward, especially with the radius so far in front of the pivot of the bail joint.but a flat/parallel surface area for clamping looks pretty grim.

05/07/2015 at 5:11 am #25522I will Thanks Josh! He was nice enough to leave a big Bowie he cut out for us to practice on. I will take a picture of what it is now, and then Do some grinding on it so you can see what was done. All kinds of interesting tips. My mind was saturated within the 3 hours of watching and listening. Now I need to practice!
So where are those pics anyway? π ;)
Yeah, we’ve been waiting!
05/05/2015 at 8:13 pm #25516Most blades I come across are not symmetrical. Easier to fix then you think.
Good point, Zamfir! I think for the most part we can all agree production knife companies don’t use a WE to put an edge on their products. It’d definitely make our lives a bit easier if they did. But, like you said, making corrections isn’t all that difficult. Being able to accurately reprofile and set the bevels is one of the things I dig most about the WE. I REALLY enjoy freehand sharpening and will often use the WE to reset the bevels prior to using my water stones.
05/04/2015 at 10:32 am #25497A primer on asymmetry would be awesome!
Well, then I suppose it’s pretty much my responsibility to take the reins considering I’m the one who planted such a seed so haphazardly and all… It’ll be a challenge, that’s for darn sure.
05/03/2015 at 9:54 pm #25492Thanks for thinking with us. I’d say Advanced Techniques. But I promise that if you post it under any of these other categories, I won’t move it. π
Awesome, thanks for the support Mark!
In terms of a title, I’m thinking something along the lines of A Primer on Asymmetry? And possibly a Wiki page with a bunch of compiled information and links to additional resources?
05/03/2015 at 9:35 pm #25490I think it’s time to start a whole new category on the forum covering asymmetry…
If a thread were created, under what board category do you guys think is appropriate?
– Thoughts/Theories/Science?
– Advanced Techniques?
– Tips for Specific Grinds?
– Task Specific Sharpening (cooking)? -
