As ai said I am new at this. I am a knifemaker and I tend to make a lot of daggers and use a lot of damascus steel. I am having real trouble getting the daggers to hold in the vice . I assume it is because of the shape of the double edge that causes the vice not to be able to grip the knife. Having a 14 inch dagger fall into your lap is not a good way to start your sharpening experience. The vice also is making marks onthe damasus steel. I thought about putting something to cushion the vice but that would reduce the holding ability which is already a problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steve

I use tape on nearly all of my knives to protect them. If you have an oddly shaped knife, try chamois, it is a bit thicker.

That reminds me, my buddy owns a bicycle shop down the street & I was gonna try stretching some inner tube over both sides of the vice for just this issue.
