Thanks Marc.
01/04/2021 at 8:23 pm #55641I’ve been researching this topic lately …again.
I have the Field And Sport Pro, and this came with the latest vice from what I can gather…single clamp arm in front, tension adjuster in rear, split jaws, etc. I get blade lean on FFG knives consistently…where they lean to the left about a degree. I’ve taken measurements several different ways using an angle cube…zero’d at base and checked each side of blade and zero’d at based and checked each arm.
I’ve read to many conflicting comments regarding…some say this should not happen with the new vices, some say this happens even with new vices and to ignore or accommodate and others have alluded to the jaws on the new vice needing disassembly and reversal.
I spent the money on this particular unit under the impression that the newer vices did not have this issue, and that FFG knives, as well as non-FFG knives should present vertical with no lean. I’d like a formal response from WE as to whether my purchase impression was correct or not correct.
01/03/2018 at 7:47 pm #44396Yes thank you MarcH, I appreciate your help, and I did understand your posts, which sums up the research I have done myself. My last post was pointed to my interest of how others may test to see if the knife is truly vert. If not, thoughts on arm angle settings to combat this was my intention. I appreciate the links. I’ll study these.

01/03/2018 at 7:29 am #44382Thanks to all. I’ll give it some more time. I still have questions in my mind about how to mitigate angle settings in the case where the knife is not true vertical in the vice. Is there good tutorial vids on troubleshooting this and how using an angle device? I may be overthinking this, but if the knife is not true vertical, I would assume the angle settings on the arm would need to be identical to produce the correct bevel in line with the blade, but to accomplish this, the angles of the arms would need to be different on each side to accomplish this. A vid or explanation of this would help me quiet my brain a bit.
Thanks

01/01/2018 at 9:01 pm #44354thanks again MarcH and Justin. I’ll look into a cube…but would like to hear best place to buy and what type/brand. As for the 1000 grit…is this capable of getting enough sharpness to shave hair…once I guess broken in a bit? I’m fine with a few more blocks, but was hoping 1000 would do the trick…a mirror edge sounds nice, but at the moment, a simple nice sharp edge is the goal with out damaging the blade.
01/01/2018 at 2:56 pm #44329Thanks Justin. Appreciate the response. Yes, new stones. Was hoping not have to go beyond what I have now and buy finer grits. Not yet anyway.
I don’t recall seeing the bevel difference prior to starting. But if the new vice eliminates lean to one side, would this have happened if both were set to same angle on angle settings? I assume the micro angles set the same…visually…would not come into play.
12/01/2017 at 6:34 am #42440Thanks to all. Just a few more questions please.
- I’ve read there was an issue with clamping strength of the gen 3 vice, and that this may have been rectified, or will be. Any thoughts on this?
- I have several Bark Rivers…how is it possible to preserve this type of bevel on such grinds? Is it simply better to use something else for this? If so, what?
- I’ve several fixed blades that are thicker stock, such as the BR Bravo and it’s smaller brother. I also have a few Esee’s…where my 5 is 1/4 inch. Please explain how this system can handle this, or cannot for that matter.
- When sharpening larger kitchen knives, should the blade be centered in different locations through the sharpening session to keep the same bevel across the entire length?
thanks

11/29/2017 at 10:07 am #42363Thank you for all of the input. Hope the issues with the forum get worked out.
Wanted to ask a few more questions.
I’ve heard complaints about angle readings differing from one side of the mounted blade to the other. And due to this, the bevels not coming out symmetrical. This may be due to vice limitations, etc.
I’ve also heard that the angle, and thus the produced bevel, changes as the sharpening takes place. Angle produces in center of arm rotation is as initially set, but as the arm travels for and aft, the angles become shallower, or stealer, thus producing a different edge.
Wanted to throw this out there to see If above has merit. I don’t want to spend money for the Field And Sport Pro without feeling good about it.
Thanks again,
Randy
