James replied to the topic 4/2 flaking… what am I doing wrong??? in the forum Stropping 6 years, 3 months ago
Ok, question on the diamond sprays, has anyone else had the problem of the leather swimming to not want to absorb or let the spray embed in it. Tried on my 4 micron strips and it like the leather had a water proofing on it. Some spots took, others I let the spray sit on the same spot for minutes and it never dried or embedded

Thanks for the help. I sanded them with 400 grit, cleaned with alcohol, let dry and tried applying the paste as light and even as I could. Always felt like the leather didnt accept it very well.

James replied to the topic Aluminum platens for lapping??? in the forum Main Forum 6 years, 3 months ago
Marc, you seem to be the man with all the answers I’ve been looking for. I plan to clean the aluminum and lap it at work (welder in a machine shop). When I saw WE didnt recommend using the aluminum my first thought was acidic nature of the adhesive. If that’s the case, I’d peel off the aluminum and replace with 300 series stainless.

Wow, lots of info to digest. I will post some pictures tonight of the strops to see what ya’ll think. It is very possible I’m using the wrong technique.

So, on the website it says to use the glass platens for lapping. Why is it bad to use the Aluminum ones? I’m too new to the lapping and stropping of knives to fully understand alot of what some co sider common sense. I’m self taught at most of this. Any help is awesome and appreciated.

- First time stropper, went the the videos and forums, followed all directions as best I could. But I’ve noticed that after maybe 6 knives my leather looks like it has flaked off in some areas and reminds me of a road in need of repair. Anyone know what this us or why it happens?

So I have my Spyderco Dragonfly sharpened to 13.5°. I can’t lower my angle any more for stropping. I have been stripping down to .06 microns and have had great results. What is the reasoning behind changing angle for stropping. I’m new to the concept.
