How to Set Narrow Knives in Vice

I set a 1/2" wide knife in the vice with the depth key in the top position. How can I raise it higher in the vice to avoid sharpening my vice jaws? Anyone got a trick or something to shim on top of the depth key to raise the blade up?

I set the angle at 20 degrees and this was hitting the vice. Backed out to 22 degrees to clear the vice, but still sharpened a little of the edge off. If I can raise it bit then I could get the 20 degrees. Looking for any ideas other than setting it free hand (unless you have a way to consistently set it free hand).

C’mon Andrew, we love pics here.

Can we see one please?

I set mine above the top set of holes and haven’t had any problem with the vice holding them. Didn’t use the depth key. I just eye balled level.
Guess you could always measure and record exposed amount for more repeatable results.

I made a small mark on my jaws to which I align the spine of the knife when I raise it higher than the top depth setting.

Eyeballing level shouldn’t create any issues since most knives spines are not parallel to the cutting edge anyway. Best bet is to put a mark on the vice when you get it to a spot that works so you can repeat it for touch ups.

I take a photo of each for reference.

Add a few notes etc.

Being a computer nut, they are stored on the PC/iPad.
Need an app for this.

More riddles?

Not at all. You say you have pics… you’re right we like pics… so I’d like to see pics of how you’re setting up various knives.

Do you drink?

Let me try again, maybe it is confusing. I think it would be beneficial and educational to forum members, to see the pictures of how you set up various knives in the clamp. Would it be possible for you to post some?

We call this “dick-swinging” in Aus.

I’m not going to give you any more fuel young Curtis, have a lie down.

I have posted many photos in this forum, I am not the one with the problem as this thread title suggests.
So my answer is “no” I wont.

It was a sincere question, maybe if someone else asks you’ll be more agreeable?

Sorry you don’t think it’s important to share. I really think it would be interesting.

I’ll show you my serrated solution if you don’t tell anyone. :P:

No, I was joking.

“I” don’t have one.

I guess if I only lived an hour away from Clay I could sneak a look too? cough

Yes, that and sign a very elaborate oath in blood

All joking aside, I can’t wait to finish the designs and get all these things into production. It always takes so much longer than I want.

Budget some time… It’s a lengthy NDA!

Edit: I was going to leave the blood part out.

It can’t be easy to have your brainchild examined minutely and dissected on a daily basis. It just seems sometimes like it could really easily feel like a personal attack when most of what we consider “issues” really are minor and are simply to help make a great product better. I’m sure you already know and understand this but sometimes it helps for others to acknowledge it as well. I also admire your passion and perseverance for without it, none of this would be possible.

Just hurry it up a little, huh? You’re keeping us waiting! :stuck_out_tongue:
