MStarmer started the topic 4/2 flaking… what am I doing wrong??? in the forum Stropping 6 years, 3 months ago
Okay I just got my 1500 grit diamonds and added the 4/2 Diamond emulsion strops. First off I wasn’t horribly impressed with the leather, cut uneven and a little lumpy (wavy). Second when I went to apply the emulsion it didn’t even want to spray out. Eventually it came out but dried so fast on the leather I could barely smooth it out. I tri…[Read more]

Thanks, yeah I just picked 15 and went with it. I figure it can’t be any worse than it is now and if it doesn’t last I can tone it down a bit. I honestly have no idea what they were when new. I tried to keep them somewhat usable with my Spyderco Tri-Sharp but it never really profiled the edge like the WE did. Looking at my knives now I see the…[Read more]

Well I have the stuff ordered, in the mean time I took one of my worse kitchen knives a 20+yr old Henckel and put a 15deg edge on it. Tried to take my time, and break in the stone and eliminate most of the chipping of the blade. The before shot is absolutely horrendous, the after marginally better. I took each stone and ran about half my st…[Read more]

Thanks guys, sounds like the 1500gr diamond stones and the 4/2 strop will get me where I want to go. Along with a lot more practice and some more break in on my stones.

I appreciate the reply. Yeah sharpness is more my goal. Which strop would you suggest in lieu of the film?

Ok I got my 130 and a set of 800-1000 grit stones. I’ve done about 6 knives so far and each is getting better, there’s clearly a learning curve and stone break in. While the edges are great (and sharp) I already find myself wanting more. I’m not keen on investing a ton more but I think I’ve decided on 1500gr diamond stones and 6 micron di…[Read more]

Yes but want vs. bank balance dictates a more moderate approach. From the reviews online and the posts I breezed thru here clearly the 130 is the best choice. So with that and one set of extra stones brought me a bit above my budget of around $500 but should still give me pretty stellar edges. No polishing but I can add another set of st…[Read more]

Hopefully the wife doesn’t have a stroke but I’m ordering the 130 and the 800-1000 grit stones. Time to start charging my cheap friends.

Wish for the price of the 130 you got the base. If I add the base and 800-1000 stones it’s a bit over budget for me… Ugh

One last question. Do these things ever go on sale or do you just bite the bullet and be done?

If I was sharpening for the dept I’d make them buy it! I agree, toothy is where it’s at for edc knives but some people have some nice non work stuff. This is just a hobby so far, I just want to get better at it.

With the Sharp Maker I get decent results, but mostly I’m limited on sharpening at a specific angle. This means I’m either reprofiling the blade to meet my sharpener or making a micro-bevel that’s sharp. I’m stuck at 30 or 40 degrees. I want sharp, usable edges mostly and the ability to match or refine angles. Polishing would be nice but a sli…[Read more]

Ok I’m set on buying a WE sharpener. Now I’m just trying to narrow down the choices so that I get the one that will best fit my needs. I sharpen about one knife a week for friends at work (Sheriff’s Dept) so everyone has a knife. I do okay, I’ve been using my Spyderco setup for the last 15yrs or so and it gets an edge on. It however doe…[Read more]
