graphite started the topic How "unflat" is problematic with the diamond stones? in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 5 months ago
I was checking my just-received diamond stones (100/200, 400/600, 800/1000 pairs) for flatness using a precision-ground bar stock and some feeler gauges in .001″ increments. All my stones except one are pretty flat (mostly within .002″ or less). But one of the 600 grit stones is out of flat by .011″ on one end and .004″ on the other.
Should I…[Read more]

graphite replied to the topic Knife clamping position questions in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 6 years, 5 months ago
Thanks Marc. That makes sense.
Yes, I’ve noticed in nearly every video of a WE with some use on it, there is always bare aluminum on the tips of the clamp jaws where the jaws were abraded by the stones. So it must be fairly hard to avoid that, unless you only do large, tall knives.
I did a quick test to see how far above the top of the jaws a…[Read more]

Rather than start several different threads as I try different knives, I figured I’d just start one and add to it.
My first question is about a Wharncliffe blade:
For a knife like this, if you were to ensure contact between the spine and the 2 depth key prongs, the perfectly straight edge of this particular knife would not be parallel to the…[Read more]

Jacob, I don’t know how much of a hurry you’re in, but I just got my F&S Pro (this is essentially a WE130 with a different (portable) base plus a case plus 800/1000 stones, for $75 more) and I was planning to photo-document how the clamp works for profile and distal tapers. I had similar questions as you have. I’ll do my best to get the photos and…[Read more]

graphite replied to the topic Is there a long knife clamp/holder? in the forum Getting Started 6 years, 5 months ago
Thanks for the additional info tcmeyer. I suppose I’m jumping the gun a bit, in that it seems the consensus advice when first getting the WE is to spend a fair bit of time on “junk” knives, both to break in the diamond stones, and to get acquainted with the technique.
Fortunately, I have a whole set of junk knives that I never use (I won them in…[Read more]

Hi Marc, that’s a fair point, but I like to build stuff and I already have some spare t-track, a collection of t-track hardware and knobs, and dense wood scraps.
I imagine on the long, thin knives, the clamping is more of an issue with coarser grits, where the overhanging part of the knife will vibrate as the coarse grits are drawn across it,…[Read more]

Thanks for all the replies.
Since I’m not ordering a granite base, I’ll be making a wood base (probably a plywood prototype first so I can try a few things before locking in the final one). For long/flexible knives I think I’ll try mounting a T-track outboard of the clamp, directly underneath the line of the clamped blade spine. Then build some…[Read more]

Hi Marc, re: Graphite, were you logged in to the Forum, (just trying to figure out why)? Maybe do a shutdown and restart. That always cures a myriad of problems for me.
Nope, a restart didn’t cure it. I see this on maybe 1 in 20 youtube v…[Read more]

Nope, a restart didn’t cure it. I see this on maybe 1 in 20 youtube videos. It’s strange how some will have audio and a small fraction don’t, for no readily apparent reason. It m…[Read more]

Hi Organic, I’m not sure of the reason, but your video is one of those where I get video but no audio (regardless of whether I watch it embedded here, or directly from youtube, and regardless of browser).
But when I watch it from youtube directly, when I click the other videos in the right-hand pane of the window, those have audio. Has anyone…[Read more]

Thanks Marc. If you happen across any photos of which Ram Mounts (I presume you mean the camera mounts?) were used, I’d be interested to see. But don’t go to any trouble if it’s not something you have handy.

Is there a holder/clamp for long/flexible knives included in every kit? I could have sworn I saw that somewhere but I don’t see it in any of the photos of the kits and it’s not in the optional accessories.

graphite replied to the topic Any videos of the stone thickness compensator attachment? in the forum Sharpener and Accessory Maintenance 6 years, 5 months ago
Thank you both. I now understand the principles behind it.
Just thinking out loud, but I wonder if it would help the issue of the VSTA moving slightly when the set screw is tightened, if instead the set screw was in the vertical position, tightening down on the top of the angle bar, rather than tightening in the horizontal position, against the…[Read more]

Hi Marc, re: “Irrespective of what the knife’s shape, size or style, I attempt to apply the same clamping technique and procedure to all of them.”
I must be confused. What is the purpose of the tension adjustment lever if it’s not to apply knife-specific tension based on the shape/size/style of the knife?

graphite replied to the topic FFG VS FG in the forum Tips for Specific Knife Grinds and Styles 6 years, 5 months ago
Hi MarcH, I’ll take a stab at this. I’m not sure people use consistent definitions of FG and FFG. There are just too many possible variations of knife design to fit neatly into those categories without some gray areas.
But by one definition, FFG is a special case, or a subset of a FG, where the profile taper begins at the spine and continues down…[Read more]

I haven’t been able to locate any videos on how this thickness compensator works. I only found a still photo and it’s not clear from that.

Interesting. The Amazon product description for the 360S notes this:
“…any angle measurement, measure the angle between two faces, not only in earth gravity direction“

I can’t say for sure that it’s true for all of them, but in general, yes. Your plumb-bob example is a good one, since many/most of these inclinometers use MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) accelerometers as the sensor, and these have varying outputs that are proportional to how much you deviate from the direction of gravity. About all you…[Read more]

MarcH and tcmeyer (or anyone else who wants to chime in), what have you found to be the lowest magnification you can use where you can still clearly see the burr but that isn’t so high that the very shallow depth of field takes much longer to scan the edge during each grit?
Do you do this with the microscope hand-held (which would be even…[Read more]
