I’d be more than happy to shoot a quick crash course video and post it here on the thread. If you think that’ll help clarify a few things?
Sounds good to me man.
Ok cool! I’ll try getting around to it this evening after work.
I apologize for slipping. Jerk move on my part. I’ll admit that…
SouthBySouthWest, the largest, music, film and I interactive festival on the planet, ends its 11 day streak tomorrow here in Austin, TX… Being a local resident definitely takes it’s toll this time of year, especially when you work in such an iconic part of the city.
I’ll also admit that I’ve spent time responding to, as well as creating, other threads since I told you I’d make a video. They were more or less done on the fly. Regardless, I told you I would make a video on applying compound to your strops and I haven’t. But I have not forgotten about you.
Haha just messing

03/17/2015 at 11:19 pm #24413What’s the best way to avoid this most of my knives are FFG and most are set at 15 degrees a side how can I make it not rub? It either hits the screw sticking out or the black paint itsef. I always use the top set of pins. I have foam tape and painters tape but everything I’ve tried still hits the right side of the vice. I keep going but I’m sure it’s wearing out my stones

03/17/2015 at 3:58 am #24382If your WE paste is lasting 3 knives, you’re using far too much. The paste should last many, many knives. It take very little to be effective.
When you say many knives what do you mean? The paste seems to dry out completely within a few minutes. It still works dry? I tend to sharpen 1 knife a month so I have to reapply it each time right?
It really means many knives as in dozens and dozens. When we go to trade shows and expos we sharpen hundreds of knives, stropping everyone and never adding new paste. I was just at the East Coast Custom Knife Show this past weekend and one of the guys there had the same question. By Sunday morning I’d sharpened something like 100+ knives and the strops were working great. Like Tom said, don’t even worry about adding more paste until you feel like the strops have really lost their effectiveness.
Thank you
I was avoiding stropping as I thought it was costing me 5 bucks in paste to strop each time used up the syringes on a weekend. And was wondering why it made such a mess How do you go to use the strops each time still mist then with alcohol? Also the yellow paste goes on which color strop ? I have the 3.5 and 5 strops. Do the strops really have a purpose if I’m ending at 1000 grit rather then the super fine grit you have? Thanks03/17/2015 at 12:17 am #243625u(micron) paste would be first as its more coarse…. then 3.5u which is more fine.
Recommend lowering the angle 2 full degrees to prevent rounding and blunting the apex of edge.
If you are going for a mirror polish you will most likely need a few additional steps between the 1000 grit diamonds and the 5u paste…Hope that helps.
Aloha
And which color leather does the green and yellow go on I have the propack. I didn’t know it embeds. Itself in the leather. So another wards don’t clean the strops each knife? When I come back to strop my knife a month later I do what spray alcohol on the strops and that’s it?

03/15/2015 at 10:07 pm #24337I have the 3.5 and 5 micron strops and the yellow and green paste
Which do I use first after ending at the 1000 grit? And which paste goes on which paddle?02/03/2015 at 4:18 am #23075What am I doing wrong? This was on a Delica 4
02/02/2015 at 2:01 am #23054Did you try mounting the Spydies in such a position that you’re just clamping on a small section of flats above the thumb hole? You don’t necessarily need to clamp the full width of the vise jaws.
Also, if you’re trying to find the angle with the Sharpie test, you should know that factory edges can come with a substantial error in the angles. My Delica came with 17 deg on the left and 24 on the right. This, together with the FFG mounting problems can cause errors that result in things like scratching the vise jaws.
I got 15 degrees on 1 side and 16 on the other with the sharpie so I just went both at 15. The side of the block without The screw heads is the side that hits
