I just pre-ordered the venture sharpener. I do have a full wicked edge system that I’ve used for years now. But I like the idea of having an easy quick touch up on an edge. And that’s why I bought the new sharpener.

but I’m a little concerned about the felt pads that hold the blade against the flat surface. Most of my knives have good looking blades on them. Even on the full wicked system, I need to fully tape the blade except for the edge to keep from scratching the side surfaces of the blade. Those felt pads look like metal dust magnets to me, and I’m a little concerned about scratches on the plate from that. I’m not sure how easy it would be to clean those pads.

What are your thoughts about this?

My thoughts if collecting dust/scratches are a concern, cover over the felt with some tape, cover the sticky portion of the tape that goes over the felt with another piece of tape (sticky side to sticky side) and secure around back of the angle adjuster. Just a quick thought.

The pads serve two purposes – firstly they act as a wiper to clean metal swarf from the blade as you sharpen, secondly they give the blade something to push against to propel the knife guide forward. Before we added pads to the system, we were seeing scratching on the blades. Once we added the pads, the scratching mostly went away. We redesigned the area that the pads stick to and removed the ribbing that enclosed the pad area. The combination of the removed ribbing and the pads has been working great with no scratchin. That said, if you are still concerned about it, you could run a strip of painters tape along the area that pushes against the pads.
