Hey Wicked Edge,
Fairly new to the wicked edge world of sharpening. I am wondering if you guys could recommend a USB microscope? what are you guys using and getting good results with?
I have a couple jewelers loupes that I use but was thinking of taking it a step further. if you guys have something you like that works good and can help to point me in the right direction that would be awesome!
appreciate any help or ideas..
thanks guys
Aaron
11/28/2018 at 4:24 pm #48348Welcome to the Wicked Edge Forum Aaron. There are a lot of good and inexpensive USB Microscopes available these days. You might shop these on Amazon. Depending on the compatible device you’ll use it with may determine your selection. For an inexpensive, simple to use model that’s compatible with windows and Android I like this Plugable Model. I use it hand-held to simply view my progress as I sharpen. Lighted and magnified I get a good view, (and photos) of my blade edge and scratch patterns. This is a good starter model to get the hang of it. It has basic functions and features. No bells and whistles. Other more sophisticated units with more features are available. Make sure to shop for something compatible with the device you will use it with. Not everyone is iOS or windows, or android compatible. Some devices, like smart phones, may require adapters to plug the scope in.

The one Marc linked to above is the one I use. I have been using it for over a year and it has worked great. It is a 2MP scope which I find adequate. One caveat, you should buy some heavy UHMW slippery tape and stick two small pieces around the clear ring – even with ring edge that will touch the knife edge – tip of the hat to tcmeyer.
My scope currently has a divot about 1/8 of an inch deep from rolling it from one side to the other. I just got my roll of tape from Amazon today and will test it out this weekend.
One thing I really like is that the pluggable can take pictures by touching the top. I don’t have to reach over to the computer and click the software button.

11/28/2018 at 8:48 pm #48351Ditto the slippery tape… I also adopted and have applied the teflon slippery tape to my USB scope’s lens shroud based on Tom’s (tcmeyer) recommendation, learned years ago, reading on this Forum.

11/29/2018 at 9:35 pm #48366Got to love Amazon Prime if you buy enough stuff to make it worthwhile, then it’s worth the price of admission. Especially because it includes the streaming movies, music and books.

12/12/2018 at 3:43 am #48501It has taken me some attempts to get this post right, but here it is. I have been able to get this one work with my Samsung Galaxy phone, but it wasn’t without trouble…

The idea of using my PC, while I’m sharpening, doesn’t appeal to me. The particles released from the stones could eventually damage the PC. My smartphone is much better protected, so it is the option, I prefer.
Handling both the microscope and the knife and taking pictures at the same time hasn’t been easy for me, so I have ordered an aluminium alloy base to hold the microscope. The stand seems to have enough weight, to make it stable, which will hopefully give me more control:
.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0797PPX8DI found these USB magnifiers and they look like they fit the stand. However, I can’t say for sure, and I don’t really know, if they offer advantages over a smartphone:

Also, I have not tried these microscopes, but I think they look interesting:

Or perhaps the DINOLITE USB Microscope AM2111 is an option…
Best regards, Jens
