Hey guys, I’m really struggling with getting the correct setup to avoid buggering my tip on drop point or other curved knives. I’ve tried several positions and can’t seem to get it right. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the blurry pic. I’ll can take a more focused pic when I get home tonight if necessary.

    I have a pro pack 2 with a gen 3 vice upgrade.

    Thank!

Level the blade, (don’t have it angled up like you do now), and follow the instructions on this page.  (If this doesn’t work, maybe better describe what’s going wrong… and/or a better picture).

I’ve tried with the blade level, but I’ll give it another go. I’ll take a better photo when I get home, but you can see a sliver of brown marker on the tip. I can’t seem to remove it no matter how I position the knife. So I guess I have a second shoulder on the tip of the knife. The rest of the edge is fine. Thanks for the reply. I’m sure I’m doing something in my setup to cause this, I just haven’t figured it out completely.

Ah, I see it now.  If you can move the tip farther from the clamp, that should help.  It looks like the tip moves into thicker steel, so it may take a bit of work to bring the angle down, even a little bit.  But as long as the stone is reaching the edge… it should get sharp.

No problem.  You may have to concentrate a little extra grinding in that area… just check often so you don’t over grind, and be careful not to grind the tip off… (one thing, don’t let the stone rotate around the tip).

I can’t tell for sure if this is the same problem from your photo, but as you move your stones past the tip, make sure to keep the handles in the same plane.  Don’t let the stones rotate around the tip.   It’s the same principle as if you were hand-sharpening on a flat stone.  You keep the same angle until the blade is completely clear of the stone.
