I’ve tried every possible keyword search I could think of.
I’ve torn through countless web pages and images.
I’ve searched. And I’ve searched. And I’ve searched.
… Nothing. So, assuming it would probably already be on the web if someone had the same audacity, I’m thinking this could very well be the first custom WEPS.
… Maybe?
I really love how it turned out. And I hope you guys get a kick out of it.
Thanks.

02/13/2015 at 5:02 am #23336I recall seeing a custom one from a couple of years back the blue anodised base was stripped & polished there were some more custom bits & I think he had it fitted into a cart that he pulled behind a Harley he also had some neat folding table that suited a mobile sharpening session .
I went back through the posts but Io could not find the right title .He also used electrical shrink tubing on the top of the vice which both serves to protect the outer parts of the vice and adds a bit more grip to the jaws.
Hopefully someone else will remember the post & possible repost the pictures.,
Nice job on yours by the way.02/13/2015 at 5:35 am #23337I recall seeing a custom one from a couple of years back the blue anodised base was stripped & polished there were some more custom bits & I think he had it fitted into a cart that he pulled behind a Harley he also had some neat folding table that suited a mobile sharpening session .

Niiiiiice, Josh! And thanks for the compliment.
You know… After a lot of thought, I wish we had other options for vise materials. I know yours are made from D2 tool steel. Would you be interested in making some extra cash? I want some 🙂

I stripped everything but the riser and only Plasti-Dipped the base of the sharpener bright green. You have to go the Pep Boys for the Blaze and other product lines. You’ll only find white and black at Home Depot and. Lowe’s. Auto Zone and O’Reilly don’t carry it.
As far as the mounting base goes, I just picked that guy up yesterday. I’ll do a video in the the entire new set up asap.
Thanks,

Unfortunately I had to have a local fabrication shop make mine for me… May want to check locally!02/13/2015 at 11:06 pm #23361Because if I had your vise I wouldn’t have to worry about a manufacturing error like this…

I like the idea of a steel vise. Why were these replaced? Do you still have yours?
02/14/2015 at 12:17 am #23363I just heard back from Kyle and this was his response:
“We are temporarily out of the vise jaws with the SS insert. They were supposed to arrive last week but the shipping carrier lost the package. I have ordered more from the factory but they won’t be here for 3 weeks at the earliest. I will write up an order for you and send you the new vise jaw as soon as our shipment arrives.”Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No I don’t have mine anymore, Long story… Lol. I have a new vise in 4160 but I have to get it heat treated before I can use it.02/14/2015 at 1:27 am #23365I just heard back from Kyle and this was his response:

That’s annoying. Surely they knew there would be SERIOUS clamping issues. The fact they knew this and opted not to inform us when we ordered ours bums me out… As if they hoped we wouldn’t notice?… Dang.
Maybe they’ll hook us up with the new floating jaws to show how dedicated they are to maintaining brand loyalty, because, after all that’s the ultimate objective when wanting to sustain a product and brand long-term. (fingers crossed).
02/14/2015 at 12:00 pm #23375The damage shown in the photo was caused by the end of the jack screw galling the softer aluminum in the vise. Probably caused by a burr on the end of the screw. The design of the vise requires that the screw be turned under load – a premise which requires a flat end on the screw. I think that all that really needs to be done is to clean up the damage and flatten the end of the screw. I recommended a couple of years ago on this forum that users polish the ends of their jack screws and apply a little grease at the point of contact. And on the screw threads.
There’s a lot of users who’ve been tightening their vises for years without this problem. I think adding a stainless insert is overkill, trying to show that WE is living up to their rep as a first class service company. It should not be inferred that they’re admitting to a design flaw in their product. Come on, it was a crummy screw.
Whenever you have one metal part scraping against another, one of them will have to give. Designers make sure that one part is hard and the other part is soft. Didja ever notice that sleeve bearing are always brass or bronze or babbit? Either the two will slide against each other or the soft part will “smear” until it conforms to the shape of the hard part. Unless you solve the problem of the end of that bloody screw, stainless on stainless will still be a problem. One solution might be to put thrust washers under the insert so it can rotate. Or make the insert harder than Japanese arithmetic.
