Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong part of the forums…but I just received these “glass” platens and one of them came with “divots” on an edge. Also…they really feel like plexi-glass, not real glass. Has anyone else had these issues?

Give WE a call. Their customer service is great. What’s a divot, by the way?

Did you buy them from Wicked Edge directly? If so, they’re definitely glass, not plexi-glass. The “divots” may be where the edges were fractured (cut) and then sanded. Do you have a close-up photo of the edge of the platen?

Yes I bought directly from Wicked Edge. I’ll take a better photo when I get home tonight.

Oh, apologies for the use of the golf term “divots.” But yeah they are small recesses on the surface.

No problem about the terminology, you were plenty clear. I’m looking forward to the photo and then we can see if anything needs to be done. If so, we’ll be on top of it. Have you tried using them yet?

I think I can see what you mean. It looks a little messy. Please try using them and let me know if they work well or have issues.

I made a couple of batches of glass platens and all of the glass plates had such chipping along the edges. As a result, I eventually realized that they were causing most of the deep scratches I was seeing in my bevels. My plates were a full inch wide, so the 3/4″-wide strips didn’t cover the raw edges and I had to sand and polish out all the sharp edges on the glass.

With Wicked Edge platens, which are 3/4″ wide, your strips should cover the edges fairly well. If the edges are polished so as to eliminate any possible scratch producers you should be OK. The “divots” in your photos are quite a bit smaller than mine, so I think Clay is right. Try them out for awhile and watch for scratches. The divots are a normal result of cutting glass with the scribe and crack method. The (more expensive) alternative is probably to use a diamond saw.

I have lapped most of my glass platens on a diamond lapping stone to get them truly flat, at the same time I chamfered the edges on the glass too to prevent any scratching issues. my guess is that those chips will cause issues but I may be wrong. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the input everyone! They do work well…as long as I make sure to not put any extra pressure on the edge with the divots…I can feel a little hiccup as it slides against the blade.
