unfortunately I won’t be taking part in getting one as I have a nice 2x72 that I sharpen with =) but someone should definitely take advantage of this even if its just to save hours of re-profiling work!

So in all seriousness, I am planning on picking up a variable speed bench grinder. And I have a 4" wide grizzley belt sander.
I have thought for reprofiling hard knives to take some of the time out of it… would this belder be the ticket or would not the ken onion work sharp do the same thing for much cheaper?

My 2 cents, with discount, a no brainer. Kali.
Ones portable, ones not. That’s up to you.
I like 1" x 42", not a fan of 4".
Main thing, belts, availability, pricing.
I’ve had great luck finding great belts as low as $1.25 each.
Trizacts at $5.25.
That Baldor motor, though single speed will last and last and last and last…
Excellent so you can have on set up for knives & the other for scissors with you jigs.
i have almost used trizacts since having the kally, but i am testing out linen belts more and more with Ken’s CBN stuff. - results have been outstanding on my thrift store practice knives…
stand by for more.

Once you do, you can’t go back.
There is a certain feel with them, and I get 5xs the life out of them.
Just sometimes so damn hard to find.
A100, A65, A35, A16 … keep a Ceramic Norton Blaze 120 for the rough stuff.
A6 is nice but not needed if you go to leather after A16, I load it with 1 micron black boron.
When they come back in a year, all they need is the 35, 16, leather most times.

Gents, I know (too) little about belt grinders. But if I want to get one - and I emphasize quality, not quantity of knives I sharpen - what should I get?
The names I keep hearing over and over again are Kalamazoo and Tormek.
What else should I be looking for? Variable speed control? Ability to do straight edges? Availability of belts?

Trizacts … completely different then regular belts.

Supergrit is hit or miss on who makes the grit, but they are not bad at all, especially for the price:

They do leave scratches, especially before broke in, but eve making the difference up with an a100 is quick and accurate.

personally if I was wanting to get something small that would make my life a lot easier then I would get the Viel SM-5. the reason being is that it has tons of jigs that are manufactured for it! they have these jigs plus more: scissors, drill bits, planer blades, knife, etc.

That said, judge my angles are done by the width of the spine to belt in relation to height, so I work edge down anyway.
Makes the bur stay and gives you a gauge just how bad the owners screwed up with their bowl shaped stone 
Can do with the Viel as well, without attachments, but I like a short platen, the Viel makes me keep my shoulders and arms up.
6 of 1, half dozen of the other.
Viels long platen is great for roller coaster edges, and it lays down with no mods, which can come in handy.

Tormek is nice, wet stone, nice and slow, jig.
And jigs and jigs and jigs.
I tend not to use it as often, too much time, but a great tool in the arsenal.

Man Ziggy… You sound like you have almost every piece of equipment one could hope for! Lol
Yeah I’ve never owned one but I like the idea theoretically. I also freehand on knives but for some things a jig is nice (such as a TAS for example). So what would you think about the Viel if you could modify it and shorten the platen?
The kali is like the creme of the crop to be sure when it comes to small portable sanders.
Hopefully at some point in the near future I am going to be converting my 2x72 to water cooled and then putting a VFS on it… It will be a sweet settup to be sure!
