I just bought a Gen 4 sharpeners, and I have an old Rapala filet knife that I would like to sharpen at 15, 16, or 17 degrees. The problem is thin (top to bottom), and when I clamp down on the very top of the blade, the stones hit the edge of the vise unless I am at 19+ degrees. Any thoughts on how to hold the knife and sharpen at < 19 degrees?
I have a 120 and use the low angle adapter for this kind of knife. a small victorinox I can sharpen at 17-19 degrees easy. A 6 cm wide nakiri I can sharpen as low as 7 degrees. With the adapter you can also clamp crazy thin and small knives, I always put painters tape over it to clamp better.
Try painters tape first, I can sharpen trapezial utility blades this way, they come out better than new.
ErikM, many thanks for the suggestion of the low-angle adapter. My only frustration is that when I spent over a thousand dollars on the Gen-4 Pro, would it have been too much to expect the company to include a low-angle adapter?
I bought the propack 3 with most things in it but it was €1400 with a discount haha. Its worth it but its expensive yes. There are also some 3D printed adapters floating around but I prefer the original.
